I live on the borders of Earls Court in London. The exhibition centre is ear-marked as a venue for volleyball for the 2012 olympics, but in the few years that I’ve lived here I have noticed the number of exhibitions and concerts dropping off markedly. Earls Court was launched in 1937, and what is now known as Earls Court 2 was opened in 1991. I believe the original building is listed, although Earls Court 2 looks very much like a nissan hut to me!
Right now there’s a controversial redevelopment plan for the whole area. The main carpark on Seagrave Road will be the first area to be redeveloped while plans include demolishing both Earls Court 1 and 2 and potentially much of the social housing on the North End Road.
So far I’ve been to a couple of exhibitions about the planned redevelopments and was really impressed with the plan. But, friends in the area are less enthusiastic, so I will go back to the next exhibition one day next week and try to keep an open mind. I’ll report back soon!
