Yesterday I went to Queens. We went for lunch first at ‘Curtains Up’, on the corner of Vereker Road – where you can eat a reasonable pub lunch for about half the cost of the food inside the Tennis club. It should have been a fabulous afternoon of tennis with Andy Murray followed by Raphael Nadel. But, we caught about 20 minutes of tennis before the first hour of ‘play halted through weather’ then a further 40-50 minutes before the same happened again. It was cold, damp and miserable.
I love Queens Club when the weather is good BECAUSE it is a lot more open to the elements than Centre Court and number one court at Wimbledon. But when the weather is bad, obviously that works against the spectators. The entrance to the courts is through makeshift tunnels topped with a ‘Aegeon’ blue netting material. Unfortunately it’s not in the least bit rain proof, so you find yourself stuck in a crowd with big drips of water landing on you. And, because I was in Grumpy Old Woman mode, it really annoyed me. I left after a drink…and of course the weather then held for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Ah well…serves me right for the bad karma. For what it is worth, Murray did look to be playing well, the little I saw of him.
