One afternoon and three treats!
Well, three treats and one interruption. We both arrived in Piccadilly co-incidentally with a very peaceful but very well attended Sikh rally to commemorate the the 1984 attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, north India. London’s road system doesn’t deal well with protests…and my friend who had decided to drive found himself in serious congestion. An hour late, he found somewhere to park and arrived at the Royal Academy.
Summer Exhibition previews, in my experience, are always packed. I don’t know why…the Summer Exhibition runs from 7 June through to the 15th August. But those of us who are Friends or friends of Friends do like turning up early! This year’s exhibition was not markedly different in content to previous years (in my opinion), but the layout of the exhibition was perhaps a bit more structured than previous years. We had planned to check out Taste of Spain on Regent Street, but we got there as it started to rain. It was very, very busy and those food stalls we could see had extremely long queues for a taste of jambon or whatever. Checking out The Taste of Spain facebook page, this seems to have been the consensus view. We caught a bit of a lively band and drumming which was great fun and saw a little of an excellent band. But, the crowds, the weather and the queues were off-putting, so we gave up trying to get a Taste of Spain fairly quickly and went to find somewhere to sit and eat.
My aim was to go to El Pirata, one of my favourite tapas bars in London, but as we discovered, it is closed all day Sunday. So we went back to the main part of Shepherd Market. Iran is a Persian restaurant that so far as I can see is really not very well known. I’ve been once before and enjoyed the food thoroughly so I wanted to go back and check if I still felt the same. It’s a small place with just a few tables, a bar and an open bread oven upstairs and a little basement mirrored room with space for about 15 to 20 diners. Find out how the meal went in my Restaurant review.
