I was recently sent a few samples of Dreamfields Low GI pasta. Now, isn’t it everyone’s dream to have comfort foods that are good for you? Whilst low GI foods are not the same as low calorie foods, I am told they are much healthier and you will find some diets that are based on low GI foods. Since I’m no expert, I tend to try to follow the advice of others, while my choice is usually governed by what tastes good.
As you may already know I have been experimenting with balcony gardening and right now I have a glut of ‘Gardener’s Delight’ tomatoes. I’ve seen these classified both as cherry tomatoes and salad tomatoes…in size terms those growing on my balcony are a little larger than most cherry tomatoes but rather smaller than most salads. They are quite firm and very juicy, delicious cooked or raw. I’ve used one crop to make a jar of mi-cuit tomatoes, by slow baking in the oven with a little olive oil and salt for about 90 minutes. Mi-cuit tomatoes keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks once cooked so it was a good way to use up some of the excess from my balcony gardening efforts. And I still have plenty for me to eat. Here’s what I made with the pasta and tomatoes. The sauce was a mix of fresh and mi-cuit tomatoes and a little smoked chili garlic all cooked in olive oil for a few minutes and seasoned with fresh basil and a few shavings of parmesan. Light, summery and delicious, the whole meal took about 10 minutes from start to finish and the sauce was a perfect foil for the Dreamfields Pasta.
The ‘low GI’ of Dreamfields is, according to their website, achieved by a special process which protects all but 5 grams in each serving (2 oz. dry) from digestion. They also add a prebiotic vegetable fibre that is supposed to help digestion by encouraging healthy bacteria in the gut. Well , I eat chocolate…and you know what if it doesn’t taste good, I’m not going to switch to a ‘healthier’ version. And in exactly the same way, I eat pasta and have no intention of switching if I can taste the difference and don’t like it. So, it was important for me to cook and taste the pasta with a light sauce. Amazingly it really didn’t taste different to my regular pasta (I generally buy waitrose own brand). And, the only real differences I noticed are that it took a few minutes longer to prepare and as I type I still feel quite full up a couple of hours after eating. I’d happily buy it if I was looking to reduce my GI intake.
And, now I am wondering what to make next from my balcony garden – when I checked yesterday I found a purple chilli!
