This may be your last chance to get it right. Probably your best bet at this stage is back to a bottle of something special that the recipient wouldn’t normally buy from the supermarket but that they still yearn for. Something like this bottled of Babicka Vodka does looks really special and Christmassy.
And, a present of the ingredients for this cocktail or the vodka together with a cocktail mixer or a pretty pair of cocktail glasses might just work a treat. You can buy it from Harvey Nichols for £35 a bottle.
Babicka Vodka is from the Czech Republic and is a very fresh, light wormwood vodka. I was sent a bottle last week and I’ve just tried making this lovely Christmassy cocktail with it…I think it was my best attempt yet at making a cocktail. We think it would work very well as an aperitif, but it’s beautifully refreshing and I’d be happy to drink it after a heavy meal too.
Recipe: Sage Martini Cocktail
This cocktail couldn’t be more suited to Christmas with its subtle notes of stuffing flavours and beautiful colour
50ml Babicka Vodka
25ml fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons of honey
5 sage leaves
4 pieces of fresh pineapple
Muddle the pineapple with the sage. If like me you don’t have professional cocktail making equipment, the way to do this is to put the pineapple and sage into a bowl and mush it down with the end of a wooden rolling pin or something similar.
A tip from my cocktail course is to make sure your shaker is chilled before you start. I fill mine with ice about an hour before I want to make a cocktail and stick it in the freezer. If you have space you can chill the vodka and glasses this way too. Or if it’s cold enough outdoors, put the bottle in the snow!
Put all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker full of ice and mix well. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, then a jar full of ice-cubes works very well, just remember to strain the liquid out through a sieve!
Double strain into a cocktail glass
Garnish with sage (woops, I only picked enough to make the cocktail, so my glass is ‘ungarnished’).
You could try this cocktail on the rocks too, it was very refreshing and we both enjoyed it.
