MY Samsung speaks ENGLISH not American
As some of you know I am a Samsung Mob!ler and I was given an SIII to test as part of the programme. When we were asked to review S Voice on the SIII, I was just a little concerned. I’m not good with voice activated systems. I get REALLY annoyed when I have to get through a voice activated IVR. But, of course with the SIII all S Voice does is replace things that you might do with the touchpad. Sometimes, not always I can see that would be useful.
Just to prove I could get it to work I made a little video. If I can use it, ANYONE can!
The first thing to note is that my ‘voice of Samsung’ is male and English. Not American. I kind of like that level of detail. I am guessing that it’s picked up the registration information we gave and knows enough about me to match me to a man (and actually an older sounding one at that) who speaks with a very proper English accent. That could be wishful thinking but I’ve seen a few video demos where the voice is definitely American…
And, I’ve enjoyed finding out what S Voice can do. I can see that it could be very useful if you are trying to navigate somewhere. I’ve tried typing in names of places on the move and it can be very frustrating. It’s clever enough to go search google when it doesn’t know the answer too. Most of the commands though are quite obvious. You can check the weather, set your alarm, ask it to call someone in your address book and even get it to send a text message!
It seems to do quite well at picking up what I am saying and converting it to a text message – rather better than my typing anyway!
And, I love the camera voice activation. If you activate S Voice and then the camera, you can take photos using the voice command ‘Shoot’! Very cool and actually quite useful because it means you can hold the camera steady while you take the picture!
Sadly I can’t think of a sensible way to show you how it works, because what you see on screen is the photo you are taking..NOT anything to do with S Voice. So, instead, I’ll leave you with my favourite silly video about voice apps.
