Workshop Coffee, Clerkenwell

Workshop Artisan Coffee in Clerkenwell:

Clerkenwell is not my normal patch.  Achingly trendy, home to Zetter Town House and the Modern Pantry, it’s somewhere I keep meaning to visit properly.  But, picking one of the coldest days of the year isn’t conducive to wandering the streets, so I scurried into Workshop Coffee a couple of hours earlier than I’d intended to arrive for a business meeting, on the basis that I could eat some lunch and generally chill out…or to be more exact warm up!

The bar downstairs at Workshop Coffee has a large counter area where you can sit and a few tables, while upstairs there’s an open kitchen area and a slightly more formal restaurant area.

The menu is more than your average coffee shop with dishes like guinea fowl saltimbocca, rare breed hamburgers and ocean trout in miso, ginger and lime with chili.  Now I honestly wasn’t that hungry so I picked from the smoked haddock fishcake from the ‘smaller’ menu (ruining all my good intentions by ordering fries and a rather good home made mayonnaise to go with it).

Very good too –  comfort food for a cold day, though at a guess there was more salmon than smoked haddock in the version I was served.  The restaurant and bar is licenced too, so you could actually sit and drink beer or wine.  But what you should do is try their coffee.  That’s the raison d’etre of this place.

The coffee of course was spectacular.  I started with Americano which came with its own little milk bottle…and then progressed to the aeropress special , La Divina el Salvador which was delicate and fragrant and really quite unlike any coffee I’ve had before.

By the time my meeting started I think I’d really overdosed on coffee a bit…but luckily the tea was equally good.  This is a SERIOUS coffee house with beans mixed and roasted on the premises.  You can drink in, take away and buy packs of beans or ground coffee to take home.

I’d recommend trying the aeropress coffee, simply because for me it gave me just a little insight into the art of making coffee.  And that’s what Workshop Coffee is all about.
