More About Royal Ascot 2013:
Royal Ascot is the perfect event to dress up and enjoy spectacular horse racing in style. This year, it runs from Tuesday 18th June to Saturday 22nd June and with the prize money reaching £5 million for the first time, promises to attract the best of the best in horse racing. And for those of us with an interest in food and wine, there’s another reason to be there. This year, the Panoramic restaurant will be in the hands of Tom Kerridge, the charming and ebullient Chef Patron of the two star Michelin Hand and Flower pub in Marlow. It’s almost impossible to get a table at the Hand and Flower, so, what better than to combine the style of Royal Ascot with Tom’s wonderful food.
The preview event last week gave us a chance to meet Tom and hear a little about how he was persuaded into taking over the restaurant for Royal Ascot this year. It’s an iconic British event and Tom is well known as champion of all things British. And, Tom was just a *little* excited by the venue, with its sweeping views of the Racecourse. He’s come up with a menu that is just a spectacular – classic English dishes each with their own special twist. How about treacle cured beef fillet with braised shin, courgette flower and clotted cream pomme puree?
Or poached lobster and late season English asparagus salad with summer truffle dressing?
The small dishes we tasted at the Bluebird last week were samplers of the type of food that will be served in the restaurants. Each was delicious and faultless both in presentation and flavour.
We also enjoyed meeting and previewing some of the food on offer in the Parade Ring restaurant and chatting to Executive Chef Steve Golding. Matching wines have been selected by Olly Smith and there’s a promise of some great dishes matched to fabulous wines. Feast on wild sea trout, quail eggs, capers, tempura and preserved Meyer lemon vinaigrette, with a Pouilly Fuisse Domanie Trouillet to match before moving on to a main course of halibut with Beaufort cheese and lemon thyme crust asparagus, summer pea and mint tortellini with Meursault Michelot.
Just try to remember you are there to watch the horse racing, though as you’ll be doing so from alongside the Royal Box you might not need TOO much of a memory jog
