Preview – The Commitments – Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1
We’re looking forward to the world premiere of The Commitments on 8th October in London’s West End. With a line up of young talent, many in their early 20s, the lead of the show, Denis Grindel, who plays Jimmy Rabbitte is still finishing drama school and is making his West End Debut. And the three Commitmentettes, Dublin’s answer to The Supremes are to be played by three young Dublin girls, also making their West End debuts in lead roles.
Roddy Doyle’s novel has been adapted for stage by the author himself and will be directed by Jamie Lloyd. From Roddy’s reaction, the Booker Prize winning author is more than happy with the production.
“I’ve been sitting in rehearsals, watching these terrific young people becoming The Commitments. I’m hearing them sing; I’m watching them play their instruments – and it all makes me very happy and excited. What amuses me most is the fact that only one of them was born when I wrote the novel”
The story tells of a young working class music fan who shapes the most unlikely bunch of amateur musicians into the finest soul band ever produced in Dublin. It’s funny, lively and and highly entertaining, packed with live music in the form of classic soul songs by the likes of Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Wilson Pickett.
