Preview – Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse:
When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. Famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.
Testament to Shakespeare’s genius is that both comedies and tragedies have such strong current day relevance. Coriolanus, the tale of a soldier turned consul whose fall from favour during times of hardship ultimately leads to his death is Director Josie Rourke’s fifth production at the Donmar Warehouse and stars Tom Hiddleston in the title role. An actor with as much respect in popular cinema for his role as Loki in Thor and the Avengers, in 2012 he received critical praise for his portrayal of Shakespeare’s Henry V in the BBC series The Hollow Crown.
Coriolanus runs from 6th December 2013 to 8th February 2014 and the intial batch of advance booking tickets are already sold out for the entire run. But, The Donmar Warehouse runs an innovative ticket accessibility scheme in conjunction with Barclays. Every Monday at 10am, starting on 25th November 2013, throughout the run, a new release of £10 front row seats are made available for each performance during the week starting two weeks later. So, if you are quick, you should be able to get to see the show. If not, there will be a National Theatre Live broadcast into cinemas around the world on 30th January 2014
Directed by Josie Rourke, Jacqueline Boatswain, Peter De Jersey, Alfred Enoch, Deborah Findlay, Hadley Fraser, Rochenda Sandall and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen will join the previously announced Tom Hiddleston and Mark Gatiss
