Dinner on the Hispaniola, Victoria Embankment, River Thames:
Guest Review by May Cheong.
I do love Roast Goose and when Fiona asked me to review the Golden Goose Dinner on the Hispaniola, a dining ship moored on the Thames just by Victoria Embankment, I couldn’t really refuse.
The Hispaniola is an old ship that is now permanently moored on the Victoria Embankment. It has been refurbished and has been under new management since earlier this year. The Upper Deck Bar and Restaurant is open for just drinks at the bar or full meals for lunch and dinner. They even have function rooms in the lower deck for meetings and private functions.
The dining room of the Upper Deck restaurant has large picture windows whcih makes the most of the spectacular view across the Thames to the London Eye and towards the Houses of Parliament.
Our table had a stunning view of course and was next to the piano where the charming pianist serenaded us with Christmas tunes all evening.
On the night we were there, we had this fabulous Golden Goose Christmas Menu:
APERITIFLaurent-Perrier Brut NVSTARTERSCrayfish and Langoustine Cocktail, marie rose sauceRoast Butternut Squash Soup, gruyere cheese, truffle oil
Beef Filet Carpaccio, Gorgonzola, wild rocket
Wild Whole Roast Goose
Roast Chateau potatoes, brussels sprouts with pancetta,
Calvados-glazed apples, date & red wine sauce
Tunworth Cheese, truffle & port stuffing
Christmas Pudding, brandy & orange butter
Treacle Tart, Cornish clotted cream
After a lovely Laurent Perrier Champagne aperitif our generous starters of Crayfish and Langoustine Cocktail was quite a retro option but worked well as a light preamble to the rich main course to come.
The main course was served with ceremony by James the GM. The goose was wild and sourced locally. Chef Paolo carved the goose for us on the table and with it, they served crispy roast chateau potatoes, brussels sprouts with pancetta, Calvados-glazed apples and date & red wine sauce.
The roast goose had lovely crispy skin and very moist and flavourful meat. The accompaniments went well in complimenting the rich goose meat.
No Christmas dinner is complete without some Christmas pudding and here they served it with some brandy and orange butter.
Our Golden Goose dinner on the Hispaniola was a real feast and not for those who are calorie counting but it made an excellent Christmas treat! Where better to celebrate in style than in this unique dining room on the River Thames with such a stunning view?
If you don’t fancy a meal, you can still enjoy drink at the bar as they do some quite stunning cocktails too. And of course, in the summer you can enjoy your drinks on the table on the outside deck.
The Hispaniola is serving their Golden Goose Christmas Dinner for groups of 4 people or more from now until early January. You do need to preorder at least 48 hours in advance, for this exclusive seasonal menu priced at £75 per person. There is an alternative Christmas menu and vegetarian options too.
