A Celebration of Champagne Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Edition Premiere 2007 – Lunch at The Magazine:
There are events which are unmissable. Any vintage champagne launch will come high on my personal hit-list while Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque goes right to the top, partly because this champagne house is about so much more than the drink itself. It is a Brand with a fascinating history which started life as a cork supplier. Pierre Nicholas Perrier and his wife Adele Jouët started producing champagne in 1811 and went on to become one of the leading exporters of champagne of their time. The Brand as we know it today is perhaps more the work of Pierre Nicholas’s son Charles and his nephew Henri Gallice. It was under the guidance of Henri that the champagne began a long tradition of working with the arts, with Emile Galle commissioned to design a new bottle. Even so, it wasn’t until the 1960s and the launch of the Belle Epoque prestige cuvee that the Japanese white anemones which are so integral to Perrier-Jouët today became a widely recognised symbol for Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque
The launch event, at The Magazine restaurant in Hyde Park was a glamorous setting, even without the wonderful floral designs. The Magazine is a light filled modern building attached to the Serpentine Sackler Gallery. Designed by Zaha Hadid, from the outside it is intriguing and visually distinctive saddleback construction, inside it is a modern classic.
This particular event, on the first day of Spring was to celebrate the launch of Belle Epoque Edition Premiere 2007. We started with a short introduction by Cellar Master Hervé Deschamp who explained that the spring cuvee was conceived when there was a remarkable harvest of Grand Crus chardonnay grapes in a year when the chardonnay vines flowered early. While the chardonnay grapes, noted for their freshness, finesse and liveliness dominate, the macerated pinot noir adds a light colour and body to the wine.
We started the meal with Sea Bream Tartar, Fennel and Belle Epoque Jelly accompanied by the newly launched cuvee Belle Epoque Edition Premiere. A beautiful, light and fresh dish that worked well with the spring cuvee.
and finally, dessert, Pomelo, Fromage Blanc and Almonds served with Perrier Jouet Blason Rose.
All going to show that in the hands of a skilled chef like Oliver Lange and a knowlegeable sommelier, champagne is the perfect thing to drink at any time;)
In all seriousness, this was an exceptionally beautiful meal paired with delicious champagnes. While few people would try to match all three courses of a lunch with different champagnes, this worked delightfully well. And I left full of the joys of spring.
