Spa to the Stars – K-West:
Once upon a time I lived just around the corner from what is now K-West Hotel. Originally one of the BBC buildings, it closed and spent an eternity under wraps before emerging as a rather swanky hotel in a very unlikely setting. The hotel preceded opening of the Westfield Shopping Centre and I remember wondering how long it would last. I did, however, walk past fairly regularly yearning to try the Spa. So I was delighted to be invited to do just that and went along initially for my intriguingly names ‘Siberian Petals Facial’. I completely forgot that this kind of facial does usually mess-up your hair. Since I had an evening invitation and hadn’t brought a styling brush or anything to wash and dry my hair properly, I asked Hua my therapist for a hair band and to skip the scalp massage which should have been part of the experience. Instead, she was kind enough to give me a hand massage, and apparently I looked ‘fashionably tousled for my evening event.
I can genuinely say this facial was quite different to any I’ve had before. While I don’t spent my life in spas, what made this so special was a mixture of some rather wonderful, light, fragrant plant based products and the treatment programme itself. After cleansing, an intensive facial massage and then a cooling face mask. It was a very hands on treatment, I’ve had facials where the therapist leaves you for a few minutes while one or other product works its magic. Here, the process was continuous, while the face mask was on, Hua was busy doing a hand massage.
The proof of any facial though is in the result. I genuinely thought my skin looked better immediately afterwards – not always the case because I have quite sensitive skin that can easily go red and blotchy. And, more significantly it looked and felt beautifully soft the next day – and the next week. The results were far more ‘long term’ than I expected.
I’ve never come across the Russie Blanche products before but Hua explained that the idea behind the product range was to use traditional Russian beauty ingredients like Siberian Russian Golden Root and Ginseng as the basis for a very effective, scientifically optimised treatment programme.
I didn’t have time to try the wet spa on the first occasion so returned a week later because…well…I really wanted to try the snow room!
While there isn’t a swimming pool, there are some excellent facilities including a sauna, steam room and sunroom. I tried and liked the steam room. Despite the door having been left open by the previous users, it was VERY easy to get a good level of steam and heat back in the room using top up buttons in the room.
I also loved the hydrotherapy pool, although it appeared to only have four ‘spaces’ and lacked some of the water jet and power water shower facilities that I’ve found in other spas.
the little booths will appeal to couples visiting the hotel. They are very intimate and I’m sure if you are visiting with a significant other, a lovely touch.
And the snow room…well, what can I say. It REALLY did look like this. I have to admit, I walked in, was totally stunned…and rather shocked by the temperature. I counted elephants and left quickly after sixty of them had passed me by!
So, the good – the treatments appear to be superb. The spa is very well equipped and has some lovely treatment rooms. My therapist was excellent. This is the best facial I’ve had in London and perhaps ever.
The downside – it is busy. Even on a Monday afternoon, the wet spa area was busy enough for some areas to need a wait, and the changing room was a little messy. Do you blame the hotel or the thoughtless guests? I am perhaps a little intolerant in that I can’t understand why you wouldn’t put your own wet towel into the very adequate bins and pick up your own tissues. But, perhaps the hotel could check a little more regularly given how busy the spa is.
Oh and as for Spa to the Stars – K-West Hotel is popular with bands visiting London. Boyzone have stayed. And others including Cheryl Cole. It does have a bit of a ‘Hello Magazine meets West London’ feel. So you never know…
