I’m Selling! My Flat is on the Market:
Home Sweet Home has been on the market now for a few weeks and the whole process is driving me slowly nuts. As someone who works from home, I usually live in glorious chaos. I get dressed when I want, leave my coffee cup on the desk and generally act like a delinquent teenager a lot of the time. Yes I clean the place, but I’m notoriously untidy and for the most part my bed generally looks like the rather more valuable one that Tracy Enim created than like something from Cologne and Cotton where I buy my bedlinen.
Not any more. I make my bed every morning now…
Since my flat has been on the market it has gradually been turning into a show home. While there wasn’t much wrong with the place structurally, it had begun to get that ‘well-lived-in look. But now the spare bedroom with the artex ceiling I vowed to change when I first bought 10 years ago and where the chimney flashing failed 6 years ago leaving the wallpaper hanging off is a pristine shrine to Farrow and Ball
The bathroom is no longer hospital-blue but a subtle shade of grey and all my lotions and potions are packed away hidden from the public eye!
My cats look suspiciously as I vacuum every dust bunny out of nooks and crevices. And then they get bored and create a few more…
So, I’ve even employed a cleaner – albeit on an ad-hoc basis. The lovely people at Hassle know me well – and at £10 a hour have got me out of a (literally) sticky situation on a few occasions now. I like the fact I can book their services online, quite often at the last minute. After all there’s something just a little embarrassing about allowing strangers to traipse around your home if it is in a mess!
There are a few silver linings. I’ve discovered I quite like living in somewhere that looks a bit more like a home and less like a student room. I’ve even gone back to inviting friends round for dinner!
And, the fresh flowers on the dining room table and the entrance hall just provide a feel good factor. I’d forgotten how much I liked having flowers in my home. I’ve discovered I can buy online from Floraqueen and from now on I think I’ll keep that particular habit. The cut flowers really make my flat a home and cheer up otherwise boring nooks and cranies.
I’ve bought rugs for the hall and living room and I’m gradually buying up all the storage solutions I can find from Lakeland. After all if they don’t know how to do it with 50 years of experience, who does? Ooops nearly forgot, while it might be their 50th anniversary this year, I’m past that landmark already…so perhaps it’s more about teaching an old dog some new tricks?
Anyway, just in case any one is interested, my lovely flat is on the market with Foxtons. Please buy it soon, I can’t keep this tidy-home-syndrome up much longer!
