EeBria and Brew By Numbers
Guest feature by Sarah James:
Anyone who knows me well, would say that I’m more of a champagne gal than a beer drinker, so being invited to a craft brewery was a bit of challenge for me, but something to look forward to for my partner!
We were invited by EeBria to sample the beers at Brewing by Numbers. EeBira are passionate about British craft beers, and particularly enthusiastic about the ‘Bermondsey Brewery Crawl’ – a mile and a half and 6 breweries to take in on a Saturday. The rest of the week is reserved for the work of the actual brewing
The Brew by Numbers Brewery is situated under the railway arches in Enid Street, about a 10 minute walk from Bermondsey Station and 20 minutes from Borough Station/London Bridge.
We were treated to a Belgium style Saison to start with, which was very welcome after the walk.
Tom the brewer took us through the different styles of beer that he and his partner make; there is nothing here that resembles a mass producer lager!
We tried 5 different beers, my favourites being the Saison with the ginger & grapefruit, and the delicious coffee porter (this was the last beer we tried as it would be difficult on the palate to follow this.
We were guided through the brewing process in the impressively clean railway arch; and given hops to smell so that we could appreciate their impact on the final taste of the beer. Many were American hops and I asked if English ones were still used, and the answer was yes, but they were hard for a small brewer to get hold of.
Another impression that was given is that beer making is an intensive process and a lot of effort is put into creating the individual flavours. Our hosts are keen to tempt diners to think of beer as well as wine; and offered us some delicious cheeses to show just how well this worked as a partnership.
It was a fun evening, and I’m glad that we were able to hail a taxi back to London Bridge or it might have been a bit of a wobbly walk!
If you can’t get to the Brewery, the next best thing is the service that EeBria offers. They can either send a monthly case of beer across a Brewers range, or a mixed case from several Breweries.
A lot of craft beers, in particular the lighter beers (pale ales, IPAs etc.) have very short best before dates – often as short as four months from bottling. With these beers it is critical that you minimise the time from production to consumption!
The EeBria Brewery Club is a monthly subscription club where each month customers receive a case of 12 beers sent direct from a different brewery, complete with all the information you could hope for about the brewery, the team and the beers. It’s a Meet the Brewer experience in a box. The evening at Brew By Numbers was designed to show us what the box is emulating – the opportunity to learn straight from the brewer.
The subscription is £28 + £5.99 delivery (for most of the UK), with £10 off the first box – please see website for details.
The current brewery is Redchurch Brewery, next month is The Celt Experience from Wales and the following month is Yorkshire’s Bad Seed Brewery.
