Guest post by Sarah James: I love champagne, so it was a wonderful treat to be invited to Nicolas Feuillatte Bubbly Hours to discover the summer ¼ collection and preview the new X’ploration bottles for Christmas. The bubbly hours took place at Assado by celebrity chef, Cyrus Todiwala, who provided us with delicious canapés throughout the social event. You may be familiar with him from his appearances on Saturday Kitchen, and this is the 4th of his restaurants. The restaurant is situated on Waterloo Road conveniently near to the Old Vic, and offers an amazing fusion of Goan, Portuguese, and Brazilian food. As well as a full restaurant, it boasts a deli counter, wood burning ovens, and the option to order and pick up food, with spicy pulled pork featuring as a signature dish. Given that finding somewhere nice to eat in Waterloo that isn’t full to bursting can be a challenge at times, this is certainly worth the very short walk past the Old Vic. For theatre goers there is a pre-theatre menu available. I decided to opt for the Nicholas Feuillatte Rose Champagne to start on the basis that I’ve often found it sweeter than the normal Brut. I was pleased to find that this one was as dry as I could want, delicate and perfumed. It came in a 20cl bottle with a re-sealable cap and its own cute cooler case. Perfect for an up-market picnic! (I could see one of these fitting nicely into my handbag if I were so inclined!) I can see drinking this as an aperitif to a meal, as well as with a delicate poached salmon dish. The Brut Rose is available at John Lewis. Next I tried the Brut. This had that wonderful champagne ‘biscuity’ quality that I love. Again this came in the ¼ summer collection bottles as well as the normal size. I could drink a lot of this! This would also work well with food, it wasn’t overwhelmed by the spicy Peri Peri chicken, and would go well with prawns or chicken dishes. It is widely available from Tesco, The Cooperative, Morrison’s and Asda. There will be special gorgeous Nicholas Feuillatte black and gold re-usable boxes and coolers for Christmas. I know I’d be very happy to find one of these under my tree!
