The Duchess of Malfi – New Diorama Theatre:
Pell Mell Theatre Company returns to the New Diorama Theatre in NW1 with an exciting new production of Webster’s darkest play, The Duchess of Malfi.
Like previous productions by Pell Mell, the plot of the Duchess of Malfi has a contemporary feel. The widowed Duchess marries her servant Antonio in secret, leading her brothers to conspire and plot a horrific revenge.
‘What really excites me is that whilst, like any revenge tragedy, it deals in extremes of emotion and behaviour, at its heart Webster gives us characters, especially the Duchess, who are genuinely believable and relateable. Amongst the horror and the chaos is a startlingly modern story of one woman’s struggle for the right to make her own decisions’
Says Natalie York, Director of Pell Mell Theatre.
More often seen on London-Unattached writing perceptive theatre reviews, Natalie is both founder of Pell Mell Theatre Company and an associate director of the New Diorama Theatre. I’m looking forward to the production, which she tells me has influences from German Expressionism to 70’s electronic rock in a lavish and arresting design and newly composed music to create a new world for Webster’s text.
Performances run from Tuesday 5th August to Saturday 23rd August (excluding Sundays and Mondays), with tickets at £12.50 (£10.50 concessions).
