The Tasting Room
Sourced Market is run by co-founders Ben O’Brien and Dan O’Neill to bring high quality food and ingredients to the public. The Tasting Room is a pop-up restaurant and bar with the accent on smoked meat street food and quality craft beers and cocktails. Smokestak is run by David Carter and specialises in smoked ribs and other meats, cooked slowly…. to perfection! Drinks were handled by Peppermint Bars.
We arrived at the allotted time and made our way into the Restaurant from the chilly outdoors and were immediately hit by a rather wonderful aroma of smoke and cooking! I should say the smoke element wasn’t anything more than a background aroma, it wasn’t like sitting slightly downwind of your neighbour’s dodgy BBQ, it was more a reminder of what was possibly on offer.
We sat down and were offered some of the chipotle wings, which were stacked full of flavour, with a good hint of chilli heat without being too hot for those with more sensitive palates. Next up were the beef ribs. These can take hours and hours of slow cooking, but the result was sublime! I can honestly say they are the best ribs I have tasted!
The pulled pork and beef brisket burgers, or sliders as they are referred to in their smaller form, again were exceedingly good!
It was pleasing to see a children’s menu available too. I think sometimes they can be forgotten by many food establishments, but Sourced Market is thinking on its feet here, as the Ice rink just next to the pop-up will be quite an attraction to the kids; and perfect for winter birthday parties.
The drinks menu is carefully thought out, and large enough to encompass most tastes. A selection of draught beers from Fullers was available and many craft ales from London’s increasingly creative and vibrant micro-brewery scene. Cocktails were aimed at the winter warmer type; the outstanding one for me was the spiced buttered rum. Truly spectacular!
The early part of the day is also catered for, with the accent on coffees, teas and quality breakfast foods, available from 7.30 am during the working week.
I think Sourced Market has managed to achieve a bit of a coup here with the Tasting Room. It could so easily have missed its mark by being too expensive, too exclusive, given its location in the heart of the city. But it doesn’t miss and achieved everything its owners wanted. We chatted to Ben and Dan and it’s clear that supplying great food and drink is at the forefront of what they do. Yes it has to be properly organised, yes it has to turn a profit, but you can actually do that and also give people great food and drink; and still leave them feeling that they’ve really enjoyed the experience.
The Tasting Room is at Broadgate Ice Rink, Exchange Square, EC2A 2BQ until the 26th of February 2015, from 7.30am until 11pm.
