Road Testing Gousto:
Not all of us are blessed with God-like powers of cooking excellence. We may watch TV-chefs knocking up a meal for 38 out of yesterday’s scraps and think it’s pretty good, but the actuality for us mere mortals is often rather more difficult.
Even if you are a competent home cook, sometimes it’s difficult to put something interesting together as when you look in your fridge and cupboards, you find you are missing some essential ingredient, or something has just been left in the fridge a bit too long to fill you with confidence in its edibility.
Gousto has a very clever, and simple concept. They take away the tedious part of having to collect together the correct ingredients for a meal, and provide everything you need, fresh, for you to assemble the meal from. Above and beyond that, they provide recipe cards for each meal, with very clear, concise instructions, with photos of how to cook it as well.
If you feel you are okay with making cheese on toast, or maybe cooking some pasta and pouring a shop bought sauce over it but not much more, then Gousto Recipe Boxes may be the “Upgrade” you are wondering about.
Gousto will deliver you a box with all the ingredients for 3 meals for either 2 or 4 people. They deliver twice a week in London on Tuesdays and Fridays. The vast majority of the ingredients are sourced from the UK and generally from suppliers in the Lincolnshire area, whom Gousto have built a long term relationship with. Boxes can be either meat or vegetarian.
There is a rolling recipe list, changing as the weeks pass, which allows Gousto to adjust for the availability of ingredients, and stop the recipes becoming repetitive. All the nutritional details are available for each dish should be watching the calories etc.
My partner and I are both pretty competent cooks, so we were interested to see what we felt about the concept of having it all prepared ready for you. We received a big box and eagerly opened it up!
Inside were some well packed and insulated ingredients, and the accompanying recipe cards.
The individual ingredients are clearly marked and labelled, and use-by dates printed as well. Very neatly done.
The recipe cards are very well designed, being clear and simple. Sometimes a recipe can fall down at this stage, leaving wondering where this goes at what time etc. That’s not the case here; clearly a lot of effort has gone into making sure the instructions are as good as they can be.
I started with the “Curry in a hurry” recipe, and laid out all of the ingredients, wondering how close to the stated quantities the supplied items would be?
The answer was…. very close! So little difference it really wasn’t any concern! This was the case through the other recipes as well, and you could happily just use all of the supplied ingredients to the maximum without worry! The preparation entailed mainly chopping up, and guidance was given on how finely or coarsely to do this.
The cooking itself was made pretty easy by the clear instructions and it wasn’t long before we had a nice looking meal before us. Here’s the Curry.
The Bangers and Lentils.
And the Lamb and Tarragon Pie.
Eating the meals was very pleasant surprise! They were very good indeed! Tasty and scrumptious! In fact, discussing the meals and the cooking with my partner, we reckoned that they were so straightforward to cook and easy given the spot-on ratios of ingredients…… that if you weren’t much of a cook (at present) but wanted to impress….. these would easily make you look very good!
Cost-wise per meal, they represent good value for what you are making. It would be cheaper to source the stuff yourself for sure, but when you factor in the inevitable wastage of having too much ingredient rather than the correct amount, the value begins to look pretty competitive. Currently, at £35 for 3 meals for 2, that makes 6 individual meals for your money. Every main supper for Monday to Saturday for £35? That’s pretty darn good!
All in all, I think Gousto are onto a very clever concept that no one else is filling currently. And they are managing to do it with almost entirely British supplies, and supplying healthy meals into the bargain!
