Halloween at Cinnamon Soho:
I consider myself to be a real foodie, however, when it comes to eating organs, I just can’t do it. No matter how many times my parents tell me “it’s good for you”, I can’t and I won’t eat it.
Until last night.
I braved the Halloween menu at Cinnamon Soho, the third modern Indian restaurant from renowned chef Vivek Singh, a menu made up of gruesome delicacies of lamb brains, duck hearts and oxtail. Luckily they were in the form of burgers and samosas, except for the hearts – they were just hearts on a plate.
It was the brain burger that made me particularly squeamish. I made the mistake of googling images of lamb brains earlier that day. Was it going to look like a brain? It did not. Thank God. Nor did it taste like brain (I assume!) unless brains taste like chicken?
The lamb brains, deep fried and topped with red onion rings and tomatoes, surprised me. (If it wasn’t deep-fried, would it have looked “brainy”?) Burgers are my favourite food ever, so casually repeating to myself “it’s just a burger” and trying to ignore what it was made from, I actually found myself enjoying brains.
So my verdict on the brain burgers – it was the knowing that it was brains that was most off-putting.
The duck hearts, cooked in crushed coriander, chilli and onions, were rubbery and had a very similar texture to liver and kidney.
The oxtail samosa was the lesser evil of the three – something I feel that Cinnamon Soho could introduce to their normal menu and it would be a hit! Slow-cooked ox-tail and onion encased in a samosa pastry with a caper lime raita was a perfect pairing.
After all that, I found space somewhere in the depths of my belly to squeeze in some king prawns dressed in a creamy coconut sauce off the main menu and some chicken biryani! The biryani was lush – the chicken was soft and fell apart in my mouth.
And what’s a meal without dessert? I opted for the Chocolate Mousse and the Coconut Brulee.
Did I mention I wasn’t dining alone?!
The Halloween menu is available from Monday 19th – Saturday 31st October. Grab your ghoulfriends or a devilish date and go sample the body bites at Cinnamon Soho!
