A Black Rum Pop-Up with Kraken:
We were invited to a press launch for Kraken rum with a little twist! Kraken rum is a very dark rum, and calls itself a Black rum. It’s usually impossible to get Rum and Gin makers to tell you their ingredients, as that is what makes them unique, but we discovered that Kraken Rum gets some of its colour from the added spices that help create that unique taste.
Kraken has a great brand image, harking back the old days of naval enterprise, and plays upon the seafaring adventures and the beasts of the deep.
The Kraken of legend was a vast sea creature, suspected these days to be based upon sightings of giant squid. The old legends suggested that a giant squid or octopus, the Kraken, was responsible for pulling down entire ships and crew. Not a nice way to go!
Based on its colour and harking back to the Victorian era, Kraken Rum has created a pop-up shop and bar in Hoxton that sells Kraken rum based cocktails and black Christmas trees! The trees are genuine and dyed black. They have several sizes and are very decently priced too. If you want to channel your inner goth then look no further! Don’t think “Ooh a black tree? That’s a bit grim!” They actually look really good. A lot of Christmas decorations are silver, gold or red and those colour combinations work very well on a black tree.
The bar is servingfive specially created Christmas cocktails: Squid Bite, Black Espresso, The Old Kraken, Perfect Storm and Kraken ‘S’pore’. We tried a few of these and they really hit the spot. I can personally recommend the Squid Bite with its warm cider base – if you’re feeling the cold at all, it’s like a lovely enveloping warm rummy blanket that makes a welcome change from dodgy mulled wine!
