Are You Blood Wise?
Guest Post by Ashleigh Moore:
There are currently 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK, with a further 1 in 4 facing poor health or disability after cancer treatment. Of these numbers, around 1 in 25 people will be diagnosed with blood cancer, which I am sure you will agree, is a very startling number.
Although one of the relatively unknown cancer forms, blood cancer is, in actual fact, the third biggest cancer killer in the UK and comes in 137 different forms and related disorders. Of these include leukaemia and lymphoma, but also lesser known strains such as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). At the moment, there is no definitive cause for blood cancer but with more and more research there are trends and risk factors developing that increase the chances of an individual developing the disease. Unfortunately, there are also no clear cut symptoms to help with a diagnosis, every patient is different.
Blood cancer charity, Bloodwise, are one of the leading UK charities specialising in creating awareness and driving life-saving research across all the different types of blood cancer. With their help, entire families have been supported and helped through incredibly tough times, from diagnosis to treatment to recovery.
As one of the few charities that participate in their own research, Bloodwise fund over 109 research projects looking at leukaemia alone, with a further 48 for lymphoma and myeloma together, and 24 research projects looking at MDS and MPN with an additional 12 projects focusing on transplants.
While there are still some pretty scary statistics surrounding this strain of the disease, two thirds of all patients diagnosed with blood cancer are predicted to still be around in five years’ time, but not too long ago this was unheard of. Such a crucial part of this is due to the extensive research made possible by fundraising and charitable donations towards the fundamental research driven by Bloodwise.
What has this got to do with London?
Bloodwise caught my attention through their incredible fundraising events that include charity bike rides and charity run events around London’s most striking must-see sights and landmarks, not only is it for a great cause but it is actually a really amazing way to see the city! With triathlons in Crystal Palace to the Devizes – Westminster Canoe Challenge, there are so many amazing London and UK events to get involved with. My personal favourite (although I am not sure my legs will be up for it anytime soon) is the London to Paris Bikeathon where all proceeds go to this fantastic cause and you get some impressive views!
If even the talk of cycling all those miles has made you feel faint, you can still help raise money for Bloodwise by donating or even just shopping (yes, shopping!) at their online charity shop where 100% of profits go towards beating blood cancer and you don’t even need to break a sweat!
