City of London Takeaway Restaurant – Yum Som:
A rather new and unique lunchtime establishment (I am using this description lightly as its actual opening times are 7am – 5pm!) has recently joined the City of London restaurant scene, Yum Som.
This newcomer is based on the corner of Leadenhall Street and Gracechurch Street and takes a full two shop fronts. It’s bright, airy and spotlessly clean with lots of bright citrus décor, giving it an overseas / holiday disposition, a nice change to the normal dreary lunchtime places, especially at this bleak time of year.
Its early menu has various varieties of healthy fruit juices, smoothies and spiced porridges, all of which did look good the time that I walked past, one early morning, on the way to the office. However, I was here, with my companion to taste their lunch offerings.
We turned up at Yum Som, early to check out the venue. There was already a long queue of hungry looking City Workers, queuing patiently to be served next. As you enter the establishment there is a large handwritten menu above the refrigerated counter containing the fresher than fresh salads, all looked delicious. There are various incarnation of salad leaves and Asian herbs, all adding to the overseas / holiday vibe. The dazzling herbs and salads blended in perfectly with their surroundings. They take your orders here and pay for your food. The salads are very reasonably priced at £6, but when we visited that had an offer which made the salads only £5 each which was a veritable bargain. Service was quick and painless and executed with military precision. No hanging about here!
The lunchtime menu is pretty extensive and it has an array of the freshest greenest salad bases, which are eaten with various combinations of rice, noodles, vegetables, meat or tofu. These also come in various degrees of spiciness, and all have unique Asian herbs and vegetables and some delicious micro herbs.
Alternatively, you can also choose from rice paper rolls, Asian-themed sub rolls and clear cleansing soups. Everything is available to eat in (there are probably just about 15 covers though, and when I was there, it was rammed to the gunnels, so either get there early or get there later.
My companion chose the Lam Tok Beef and I chose the Tom Kha Gai Chicken, Both were served in nice American Style Chinese Take away Boxes and came with noodles and rice.
My chicken was light and fresh, you could taste the different leaves and the chicken was just slightly spicy, but enough to leave your mouth slightly tingling, wanting to eat more. The boxes on first inspection did not look very filling, as I like my food; however, there was more than enough to satisfy my appetite. My companion commented on how delicious his beef was, but could not finish it all.
We were both replete and more than happy with the delicious food offerings from Yum Som. Would I go back, oh yes, and I have. I highly recommend Yum Som for a fresh, tasty, healthy lunch, which gives you a taste of the sun!
Thank You to Leyla Kazim for most of the photographs!
