More than Cricket at Megan’s St John’s Wood:
Every neighbourhood needs a place where you can hang out, drink some wine, eat and listen to good music. Since 2002, the denizens of Fulham and latterly St John’s Wood have been lucky enough to have Megan’s as their go-to neighbourhood restaurant. I was invited to review and turned up on a chilly, damp February evening and was very happy to be met with a warm welcome and an even more welcome glass of Prosecco (£5.50).
The interiors have an attractive French shabby chic and the food crosses continents with an emphasis on the Mediterranean. We started with three small plates to share. Calamari came with a roasted garlic aioli (£5) and wasn’t quite crisp enough. But a plate of Goats Cheese with pistachio, honey and fig (£6.50) was really good with the sweetness of the honey and fig complementing the lactic tang of the cheese.
Crab, avocado and chilli on toast (£8) had a beautifully creamy crab and avocado topping given a bit of welcome chilli kick.
Main dishes are very keenly priced. Swordfish with flame-grilled roasted peppers (£11) was perfectly cooked and had lots of flavour. Personally, I like a bit more char on my peppers but the side dish of spinach with garlic (£3.70) was soft and full of flavour. The Seabass fillet (£8.50) was also really well grilled but I would have liked the Chilli sweet potato wedges (£3.70) to be crisper.
We washed the meal down with a bottle of herby 2014 Cuatro Rayas Verdejo whilst listening to the acoustic guitarist/singer who was playing just the right songs for a middle-aged audience-the St. John’s Wood branch has music on Friday and Saturday nights. Our desserts of Sea salt Nutella cookie (£3) and Salted caramel ice cream (£6) were too good and the huge portion of ice-cream was duly demolished.
Megan’s is just the sort of relaxed place you would want in your local area to chill with your date, partner or friends. The food is simple but well delivered and prices are keen and on Monday evenings you can bring your own bottle for just £5 corkage.
