Celebrate Father’s Day in style with Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve:
How will you be celebrating Father’s Day? My own father was particularly partial to what he called ‘a wee dram’. Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a very special drink for me – like many kids I used to sit by his side and beg for a taste. And I can remember my first sip of firewater quite vividly. I can’t honestly remember whether it was Glenlivet or not, but as the Number 1 single malt in the world, it’s quite likely!
It wasn’t until I was considerably older that I developed an appreciation for fine Single Malts. I’ve done a little bit of tasting now, including a fascinating evening at the Wine and Spirits Education Trust where we must have tried twenty or so Whiskies in a classroom with a large map of Scotland behind the tutor. At least SOME of the taste of Whisky comes from the terroir – from smoky peaty Western Isles Whiskies to the smoother, fruitier Whiskies of the Eastern Highlands.
Glenlivet is crafted, as it has been since 1824, in the remote Livet Valley. The distillery was founded by George Smith with the intention of capturing the character of the wild, isolated hills and ferocious climate of the valley and initially Glenlivet Whisky was unlicenced. But, George and his Son, John Gordon Smith persevered and The Glenlivet became the first licenced Whisky in the Livet Valley.
The Founder’s Reserve is intended to recreate the original Whisky with a contemporary twist. The fruity, smooth whisky is given a hint of creamy sweetness by selective use of American first-fill casks. The result, at least for me, is the perfect ‘after dinner’ Whisky.
