Wine and Spirit Tasting in St James Park
I think the Royal Parks are part of London’s hidden treasures. Given that we live in one of the world’s busiest capital cities, we are extremely lucky to have so many picturesque parks to enjoy, each one with its own individual charm. The other night I had the pleasure of attending an event at the aptly named, Inn the Park in St James Park.
Inn the Park is situated by the lake in the centre of St James Park. The wrap around wooden-cladding of the exterior allows Inn the Park to blend seamlessly into the natural environment. As well as ample seating inside there is also a rooftop terrace, awarding stunning views of Buckingham Palace and the London Eye.
Inn the Park is run by the Peyton and Byrne group and our event was to showcase some of the delicious Rosé wines they offer, as well as to sample some of the craft spirits that they are a big supporter of. My husband is a big fan of craft ales, so I am familiar with the idea of small, independent breweries producing their own beers but I didn’t realise that craft distilleries were also springing up across London. We got to sample three different gins all being distilled by very small producers across London. As each had been blended differently, they had a unique flavour and certainly packed a punch. I certainly couldn’t manage to drink any of them without a splash of tonic! We also heard from the team at Our Vodka, a micro-distillery producing vodka from underneath a railway arch in Hackney.
Inn the Park have created some signature cocktails from these spirits and upon arrival we enjoyed ‘The Britz spritz’. The main ingredient of this cocktail is Kamm & Sons, which is probably best described as an English alternative to Aperol and is made from a blend of herbs, spices, fruits, berries, nuts, peels, barks, roots, leaves and flowers!
Although it was very interesting to learn about these spirits and their producers, I am far more of a Rosé fan and it was the sampling of the different wines from Provence to Spain to New Zealand that got me excited.
To stop us all getting too squiffy while doing all this tasting, we were served some delicious canapes. Inn the Park’s kitchen serves seasonal dishes, using British producers. They serve throughout the day from breakfast, through lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Inn the Park is also available for private hire and would make a lovely space for a party or team building event.
Inn the Park are currently hosting monthly Rosé tasting evenings and August is showcasing Sparking Rosé. You get to learn about 3 different wines and enjoy a 125ml glass of each for £10. I can’t think of a nicer setting to learn more about wine!
