Mad about Mango?
The Madd Desert Bar serves Mango. Apparently the name means Mango and Addiction…and the theme is definitely mango based. It’s one of Soho quirkier offerings, on Rupert Street.
The owner clearly likes mango. And has something of a sense of humour. The result is a funky little place where you can eat desserts, drink (including mango based cocktails as well as teas and soft drinks) and chill out. If you want you can play games, there are cards and jenga sticks on the tables.
Or you can fill in a review card and get your own moment of fame on their wall
Our host, new to the bar from Rome, told us that they were open from early in the morning till midnight and that they were busiest in the evenings when people came along to relax and chill. It is that sort of place.
We ordered tea and a mango lassi before we went up to the bar to pick desserts. There’s a good selection of lovely looking offerings, mostly based on the mangos which are delivered daily. Each dessert can be personalised by a selection of free toppings.
I chose a passion fruit and mango fool. Mostly yoghurt based, with a generous helping of mango and passionfruit, this was light and refreshing, if slightly oversweet for me. My companion chose the crème brulee which was freshly caramelised by our host but which again, we found a little sweet with its mango puree base.
If you are in Soho for the day, want somewhere to chill for half an hour or so, or hang out with friends for rather longer after crispy duck in china town, this is a relaxed fun place. I can see that kids would love it. And, in the evenings the cocktail menu must make it quite a good place to just be just to escape the hustle of London. The seating at the back of the bar is comfy and cosy, I could see people settling in there to enjoy mango shooters!
So why not be Madd for a bit. And once you are mango’d out…well…
Just in case you happen to fancy a cornish cream tea…there’s a van RIGHT OUTSIDE serving Braithwaites tea and home made scones with Rhodda’s clotted cream…
Or was that just the Mango turning me MADD!
