Pretty in Pink at Gaucho’s Rooftop Beach Bar
Did you know that London has an excellent river taxi service? It runs from Putney Bridge up to Docklands on various routes and if you need to get from Westminster or Embankment up to Docklands on a sunny day you’ll have a much pleasanter journey away from the commuter rush along the river for around £5. It doesn’t take too long either – about half an hour. And boats leave every twenty minutes or so. So it seemed like the obvious choice for our trip to The Rooftop Beach Bar one sunny June afternoon.
What better way to travel?
You get to travel under Tower Bridge – and if you are me, try to take photos against the sun and fail!
And up close and personal with the Tower of London itself
The boat speeds up as it approaches Docklands and reaches Canary Wharf, where the pier is just a few seconds walk away from Gaucho
On the roof above the Gaucho Steakhouse in Canary Wharf is an open-air pop-up beach bar complete with deck chairs, daybeds and wind breakers. It’s a fun open space where the bar staff match the decor in bright pink tops (yes, the guys too!) and where there’s room to relax and chill.
It seemed slightly surreal to me on the evening we visited- although perhaps that was simply the effect of being outdoors on one of the rare sunny days this summer! All that pink and white in the middle of the City – and the chic topiary and beach-huts with champagne bottles that might have been more at home in the South of France.
You’ll find there are a whole range of cocktail options, including the special ‘Pink Puppy’ which includes a £2.00 donation to breast cancer research. And of course there’s Veuve Clicquot champagne on hand, if your preference is fizz. Cocktails start at around £10 and champagne from £12 a glass
We tried the new Pink Puppy cocktail ‘an explosion of citric juices with a twist of pomegranate, a burst of Belvedere and a dash of chocolate bitters – the perfect sweet and sour balance’. Very pretty too, although I’d still go for champagne given the choice;)
The bar launched in collaboration with Veuve Clicquot on Tuesday 28th May, is open from noon – 10pm until Tuesday 18th June. It really does have spectacular panoramic views of the city. A perfect place to meet for drinks after work or get together with a group of friends in the City.
So why not unwind and embrace summer with ambient chill out music from Sundowner DJ’s or live music from Veuve Clicquot’s ‘Pink Piano’.
