One Kensington is a loud buzzy bar and restaurant in Kensington High St from the Tamarind Collection restaurant group. The building used to be a banking hall and is decorated with amusing ‘Sputnik’-style globe lights and leather banquettes. I dropped in for a drink at the launch event and the barman made me a very decent Sazerac. As the food-well it had all gone by the time I turned up but the attractive sounding menu reads Modern European with an Italian slant. With an in house sound system it would be perfect if you want to go out with colleagues after work in Kensington.
1 Kensington High St,
Union Street Bar Southwark
The Union Street Cafe is Gordon Ramsey’s Southwark ‘Italian’ outpost and in its basement the rather trendy Union St Bar is hosting ‘The Takeover’ event for which their premium spirits brands, Ketel One Vodka, Don Julio Tequila and Bulleit Bourbon, each take up a week long residency of exclusive menus and masterclasses.
The launch event was great fun and kicked off with a Tequila tasting. Don Julio Blanco was paired with chilli margherita flavoured popcorn, the 8 month aged Reposado came with chocolate popping candy that brought out the chocolate and spice notes of the agave based spirit and 18 month old Arejo was delivered in an ‘Old-Fashioned’ cocktail mist. I’m a sucker for this hi-tech stuff and the drinks were also really well-mixed.
My next stop at the Union St event was the Bespoke Martini Bar. My choice was a blend of Ketel One Vodka with Cocchi Americano and the extraordinary Nardini Rabarbaro vermouth for a decadent take on the classic.
I love a Negroni but have to admit that up to this point I was a vodka Negroni virgin. The combination of the Ketel with the Rabarbaro and Campari gave this an oily, chewy mouth feel and a smokey bitter taste.
My final drink of the night was an Apple Mustard Sour. A mix of Bulleit Bourbon, lemon, sweet mustard, cloudy apple and egg white it was an intriguing take on the sour with the mustard and bourbon combining to give a lingering aftertaste.
The bar will serve a selection of reasonably priced and interesting sounding little plates and the dates for the event will be Ketel One Vodka from 18th – 27th April, followed by Don Julio Tequila in May and Bulleit Bourbon and Rye in June. It is definitely one to check out.
