G&Tea Bar @ Mariott Hotel, West India Quay
Guest Post by Lisa Hooper:
I was recently invited to an event showcasing the newly refurbished lobby lounge bar at the Mariott Hotel on West India Quay. Looking to get away from the label of being a ‘five star’ hotel bar, the management are keen to attract the after work crowd who frequent the neighboring bars on West India Quay. The staff are certainly very friendly and down-to-earth and the bar manager is an extremely accommodating chap, with an extensive knowledge of his trade.
This is predominantly a gin bar and to go with the theme, he had invented some G&Tea cocktails by infusing gin with a selection of flavours including a variety of teas. The infused gin was then added to various mixers including Prosecco to create some pretty punchy cocktails. All of these cocktails are available on the bar’s cocktail menu, together with some of the bar’s own interpretations of more classic cocktails.
The bar leads out to a terrace area where we were invited for some cigar and whisky pairing. At this point I sat back with a cup of jasmine tea while my husband enjoyed a Monte Cristo cigar and a glass of his favourite Japanese whiskey. Again our friendly bar manager was on hand and talked us through how to get the most from a cigar (apparently keeping the ash on the end of it for as long as possible enhances the flavour). He also recommended which whiskeys went best with which cigars.
At £4 for a beer and £6 for a glass of wine, the prices are on a par with the neighbouring bars in the area (and cheaper than the other cigar bar on the Wharf) but unlike those bars, where you are likely to find yourself three deep at the bar trying to get served, here you can sit back and let one of the lovely waiting staff bring your order to you.
