One Aldwych Lobby Bar – Bloom Gin Cocktails:
I have to admit, I try my best to avoid drinking cocktails. Exquisite though they are, I struggle to just have one, especially when the weather is hot. But, Bloom Gin is a perfect drink for Summer, with slightly sweet, floral notes and the concept of a set of cocktails to reflected the floral botanicals was just too hard to turn down.
Each cocktail aims to reflect the delicate botanical notes of honeysuckle, chamomile and pomelo, while the contemporary elegance of the Lobby Bar at One Aldwych reflects the concept with a fabulous installation by Mark Siredzuk of foxtail lilies, almond twigs, lavender and chamomile flowers.
There are four cocktails on offer and between the two of us we managed to try all of them.
The cocktail collection comprises:
Lavender Cloud – a light and refreshing mixture of Bloom Gin, rhubarb liqueur, black raspberry liqueur, honey infused with lavender and fresh lime juice. Topped with bergamot foam it is served in a chilled Martini glass. Off to a good start, this fragrant drink is refreshing and delicate whilst not being over sweet.
Blooming Tea is a mixture of BLOOM Gin, apricot brandy, ginger & lemongrass cordial, Kamm & Sons, chamomile tea and fresh lemon juice. Served in a chilled coupette glass. For me, this was just a little too sweet. But, such a pretty drink.
Smoked Flower was made with BLOOM Gin, Mezcal, grapefruit liqueur, elderflower cordial, agave nectar and fresh lemon juice was another light drink, perfect for summer. Served in a chilled Martini glass, I could imagine sipping this one on the terrace of an English country house garden.
On paper I was least sure about the Almond Bouquet. Made with BLOOM Gin, Amaretto liqueur, fresh pineapple juice, orgeat syrup, fresh rocket and fresh lemon juice. Served in a chilled coupette glass, the ice gave the drink a refreshing lift.
While I was drinking, Simon was busy recording the mixologist at work.
It’s fascinating to watch a good cocktail being made – a bit like peering into a professional kitchen, these guys make everything look so easy.
If you’d like to try for yourself the limited edition cocktails are priced at £13.50 each. They are only available until 2nd August 2015, so you’ll need to get your skates on!
