Cinnamon Soho in Summer
This summer Vivek Singh’s modern-Indian restaurant Cinnamon Soho has joined forces with ‘cocktail king’ Ryan Chetiyawardana, aka Mr Lyan, to launch a new ‘green’ Summer Festival Terrace Located in Carnaby Street’s vibrant Kingly Court, the space is attractively decked out with funky salvaged furniture and materials making the Summer Festival Terrace the eco-friendliest spot to kick back and relax this summer.
Mr Lyan, whose bar Dandelyan has just won an award for World’s Best Cocktail Menu (2017) has designed sustainable cocktails featuring upcycled and recycled ingredients like watermelon rinds, pistachio shells and leftover chai served in repurposed milk bottles. We tried a zingy Watermelon Rind Tonic, made with tequila and watermelon rind tonic syrup. It was the perfect summer cooler with a slightly bitter twist. If you want to feel virtuous, a dairy free, alcohol-free and totally indulgent Cashew Butter Milkshake blended with almond milk, cashews and crushed pistachios was a creamy, subtle drink that was a great match for the spices in the food.
Vivek Singh and his talented team have created a special Summer Festival Terrace street food menu featuring modern Indian delicacies served in recycled dishes. The menu includes small plates of Dabi Vada – chilled white lentil dumplings, cooling cumin yoghurt topped with masala chickpea giant caviar and The Bonda Bap – a South Indian spiced potato bomb in a pao bun, with green chutney, tamarind and masala peanut.
I loved the tang of tamarind and the crunch of the crispy wheat in the wonderfully spiced Papdi Chaat.
My dish of Kolkata spiced cod, mustard and red onion and red rice flakes had a great balance of spice, flavour and texture. You must try the Kerala style boatman haddock curry with tomato and tamarind. It had a really lemony tomato sauce and an amazing smoky flavour.
The house black daal was rich creamy and mopping it up with a garlic naan was a real pleasure.
As the sun sets, the terrace is illuminated with fairy lights and lanterns making it the perfect evening spot to chill. With delicious food and inventive cocktails it’s a must-try for the sumer.
Cinnamon Soho’s Summer Festival Terrace is open Monday – Sunday from 3 pm onwards.
