Starting Christmas Early at the Trading House:
It seemed like an excellent way to round off a cold Monday in November…. checking out the new Christmas Menu at the Trading House on Gresham Street.
We’ve written about The Trading House before – it’s one of those places you probably know well if you work in The City – but it was a new venue to me personally. The Trading House has an impressively themed wood panelled interior with colonial touches; a great vibe with live acoustic music and a warm atmosphere – which is all made even better at this time of year with some mulled wine for those cold winter nights.
To mark the launch of the new Christmas menu we were treated to a cocktail masterclass led by the two expert mixologists behind the Trading House bar.
First up was a blueberry and passion fruit martini known as ‘the Gateway to Riches’ – quite appropriate for this venue aimed at City high rollers – which was sweet with a punch but very drinkable! This was followed by a special Coconut Pina Colada – a mix of Coconut purée, Rum, Coconut rum, Lemon juice, Pineapple juice and vanilla syrup over ice with a pineapple leaf to finish … and a marshmallow!
Then came canapés created from some of the dishes from the new Christmas menu. Remoulade of ham, celeriac and apple with a honey mustard dressing got things off to a good start. This was followed by a tasty vegetarian roast butternut squash and mushroom Wellington with goat’s cheese, chestnut, sage and roast cherry tomato which even the meat eater said he’d be happy to choose as a main course.
Turkey kebab with spiced cranberry glaze served with a pig in blanket and stuffing ball was basically Christmas dinner on a stick, and great fun. To finish was a chocolate fudge brownie with mint choc chip ice cream which was rich and chocolatey and just what a brownie should be. My only reservation was that the selection was not so good on the allergy and intolerance front, but this was only the draft menu so hopefully there will be more allergy information on the final version – important for a family like mine with a veggie husband, a teen with severe nut allergies and a gluten-free diet lady.
To round off the evening the bartender introduced us to his piece de resistance – the Trading House East India Porn Star cocktail. This was a delicious blend of vodka, fresh passion fruit, lemon and pineapple juices, Crème de Mure, hibiscus tea, and English sparkling brut rose, with the expertly-applied blow torch giving a crisp crust to the Crème de Mure.
The Christmas Set Menu is available at the Trading House for lunch or dinner, priced at £29.75 for three courses including a glass of wine or a bottle of beer with the main course
