Celebrate Valentine’s Day Italian Style #Giveaway

December 30, 2017 by Fiona Maclean 206 Comments

Valentine’s Giveaway from Nife Is Life:

They say Italians make the best lovers.  From ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to ‘Where Angels Fear to Tread’ the English perception of Italians is one peppered with romance; dark, elegant men, lithe women with long lashes and velvet skin.  Lo Stile Italiano is passionate and sensual.

Baci and Franciacorta Valentines Italian

As if to reinforce that, the pretty bag of Italian Baci (kisses) that I’ve been sent to review by Italian home delivery service NifeisLife (which fittingly means ‘Nice Italian Food Everyday’) is full of delicious hazelnut chocolates wrapped in silver and blue foil.  A romantic version of a Chinese fortune cookie, each one contains a love message

si ama ciò che è simile ma anche ciò che è opposto
We love what is similar but also what is opposite

It is, of course, an excuse to eat more chocolate just so that you can find the perfect message.

How about

L’amore non può mai dirsi abbastanza
True love can never know satiety

Now, the man who understands and accepts that would have a place in my heart…

Perhaps my problem is that I buy too fully into my next saying

Gli Spiriti degli amanti preferiscono indugiare tra i sogni
The spirits of lovers prefer to tarry in dreams

Back to earth for a few moments – I’ve been sent a fabulous bottle of Franciacorta and some Baci chocolates to review.  I’m eating my way through the chocolates and loving the concept as a Valentine’s treat.

Baci for Valentines Day

Baci Perugina come in various sizes – from three pieces in a little tube up to a 200g box and although there are no red ribbons or heart-shaped boxes, they seem to me like a far more authentic message of love. The chocolates were originally called ‘cazzotto’ (punch) because they are shaped like a fist.  They were created in 1922 by a young chocolate maker in Perugia for the man she loved – wrapping chocolate in a billet-doux to make the perfect tiny gift.  They became popular as a gift for lovers, but the name was perhaps not quite so perfect.  So, they were renamed ‘Baci’ – kisses.

Baci and Franciacorta Valentines Italian

If you haven’t heard of Franciacorta, it’s from a small wine-producing area in Lombardy.  Unlike Prosecco, Franciacorta sparkling wines are produced using the ‘traditional method’ – the same way as champagne, with a second fermentation in bottle to provide the ‘fizz’ and aged on lees.  So what you get is a lot more refined than Prosecco.  The Franciacorta Blanc de Blanc I have uses Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco to produce a pale straw coloured sparkling wine.  It’s an excellent aperitif and works well with fish and cheese.

And with oysters – perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Guernsey Oysters 2

Of course, you can buy this and many other Italian classics on the NifeIsLife website.  Why not pop over and take a look?  Then, I’d like you to leave me a comment and let me know which gorgeous Italian you’d like to make your own Valentine – and what you’d order from the NifeIsLife website to steal their heart.  I’ve already reviewed some of the products from NifeisLife so if you are looking for inspiration do check out my post about their online Italian deli.

Me, I’m going for Alessandro Safina – an Italian tenor who I think looks rather stunning and who could also serenade me with romantic opera classics.  I’d feed him on Saltimbocca and offer him some of that lovely Franciacorta to drink.  For dessert, well…I think we’d just exchange Baci.

If you’d like to have a go yourself, just follow the Rafflecopter through as normal, remembering that you MUST leave me a comment.  Oh, and I know it’s FAR too early – but I’d like you to be able to get your prize to share on Valentine’s day!

  • April 12th  - National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

The USA celebrates National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day on April 12th.   Well, why not?   Regarded as one of the top comfort foods in America, the version we eat today originated in the 1920s when sliced bread and American cheese became easily available.

    image

Of course, those of you from the USA and those of you wishing to join the celebrations can do so in London!  Head for the glamorous art-deco inspired Colony Grill at the Beaumont Hotel and you’ll find the menu offers a Grilled Cheese sandwich with Dill Pickle, perfect for National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day.  While you are there, enjoy a cocktail or three - and perhaps a couple of other American classics - we love the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and perhaps Bananas Foster flambeed in dark rum for dessert.

    Enjoy!
