I’m a huge fan of Gelupo, Bocco di Lupo chef Jacob Kenedy’s highly lauded artisan gelateria in Soho. I need next to no reason to run in there for my regular premium gelato fix. So, when I heard that they were launching a Chocolate Sagra, a month-long chocolate festival from 6th January to 7th February and that I was invited along for a tasting – it was too good an offer to turn down. As well as rich chocolate gelato flavours the Sagra features warming hot chocolate variations, sweet chocolate frozen desserts and intensely chocolatey cakes. What’s not to like?The five unique gelato flavours include Dark Chocolate Earl Grey & Biscuits, Milk Chocolate, Vanilla & Sea Salt, Monte Bianco [milk chocolate and chestnut], Milk Chocolate, Peanuts & Caramel and White Chocolate & Thyme. These will run in addition to four classic chocolate flavours; Bitter Chocolate Sorbet, Bonet [chocolate, rum, caramel, coffee & amaretti biscuits], Bacio [milk chocolate & hazelnut] and Fresh Mint Stracciatella.Those looking for an alternative, can choose from five frozen desserts, including Chocolate Stuffed Panettone, Mini Chocolate Bombe Cakes, Chocolate Stuffed Cornucopia [fruit], Gianduja Semifreddo [sweet, chocolate speciality of Turin], Mini Chocolate Cones and Mini Chocolate Lollies in assorted flavours reminiscent of classic confectionaryIf all that isn’t enough they are featuring chocolate deli products and exciting new variations on Gelupo’s signature hot chocolate. The new flavours include a dark Mexican Chocolate and an interesting Chocolate and Cardamon. But I was there to try the gelato. Of the flavours I tried, I loved the Milk Chocolate, Vanilla & Sea Salt with the salinity of the salt bringing out the richness of the chocolate and vanilla. White Chocolate & Thyme was gentle on the palate with the background herbal note giving it an almost healthy feel! Mint chocolate was startlingly fresh in the mouth – a sophisticated update on the 70s classic. But my favourite was the Monte Bianco [milk chocolate and chestnut]. The chestnut/chocolate combo is an Italian classic and if well done makes me cry tears of pure happiness.If you’re a chocolate and gelato fan throw away your New Year resolutions and get down to Gelupo to satisfy your gelato cravings. Just leave some for me.
