Nudo Adopt an Olive Tree from Italy:
Buying a present for someone who is fanatical about food and passionate about the environment can be a challenge. We’ve been looking at some of the options if you are trying to find something unusual and special which will also benefit the environment and yet be a real treat for the recipient.
Can you imagine what eating without olive oil would be like? It’d be like returning to post-war rationing Britain, where food was pretty grim until Elizabeth David came to transform our eating habits forever.
Did you know that acres of ancient olives, some up to 1000 years old, are under threat from a fast-spreading disease called Xylella Fastidiosa? This is a huge issue across Italy, in Puglia in particular, where olive farmers are being forced to destroy entire orchards if the disease is found within 100 metres of one affected by Xylella Fastidiosa. This is a pathogen that inhibits the movement of water and nutrients in woody plants when it is found in a region, all trees have to be uprooted, whether they are sick or not if they are within the area. In Puglia alone more than 5,000 sq km of land has been classified as “infected”, and 11 million olive trees could be uprooted.
If this is something that you or a loved one/friend care about, we just may have found the perfect gift for you from Nudo.
With Nudo you can help to maintain olive groves in Italy while enjoying some of the produce for yourself.
Essentially you are paying to ‘adopt’ an olive tree for a year from one of eight olive groves across the Italian countryside. This helps to support the Italian olive farmers in this difficult time, allowing small-scale olive farmers to continue using traditional farming methods. The adoption on its own costs £39. If like me, you are rather taken with the beautiful handmade oil cruets designed by Michelle Freemantle especially for the festive season, it costs £72 alongside a gift adoption, which includes 3x tins of extra virgin olive oil from the grove of their choice. The colours used in the ceramic cruet are a reflection of the Italian countryside; yellow sunshine, green vegetation and dark blue sea.
If you are looking for a gift to give of something rather beautiful, very special and totally environmentally friendly, why not consider selecting something from Nudo
