Terrazza on the Thames at London Hilton Docklands
It’s not very often you get asked to review a patio restaurant and the weather actually plays ball, so I was particularly excited to be trying out Terrazza on the Thames at the riverside Hilton hotel, Docklands. Although the skies looked dark and stormy, it was a blissfully warm afternoon when we took the little ferry across from Canary Wharf pier to the Doubletree Hilton, located just across the water in Rotherhithe. The ferry is free to Hilton patrons and makes the hotel far more accessible to those coming from the other side of the Thames.
Terrazza on the Thames is a Venetian inspired pop-up restaurant in collaboration with Bolla Wines. Located on the terrace by the Hilton’s Columbia Restaurant, this is a tranquil setting to enjoy a lazy afternoon/evening by the river. Bolla is an Italian family owned winemaker, established over 125 years ago and they have a small selection of their wines and prosecco on the menu. The emphasis at Terrazza is very much on the bubbles and so we started the afternoon with a Rossini cocktail each (a mixture of raspberry puree and Bolla prosecco). This was very refreshing on a warm afternoon and you could even kid yourself that you were getting one of your five a day! We followed this with a bottle of Bolla prosecco, which was light and refreshing and would make for an ideal aperitif.
The food menu is not extensive and the emphasis is on sharing platters. I think the idea is to spend a leisurely period grazing and enjoying your bubbles or wine! We started with an antipasto platter for two and a tomato and mozzarella salad. The platter came with an abundance of parma ham and some lovely grilled artichokes, some small and sweet stuffed peppers and focaccia bread, dips and olives. There was more than enough for two. The mozzarella in the salad was extremely fresh and creamy.
We were told that the pizzas were small and that we should order at least two. We were glad that we stopped at two as they were plenty big enough! They had obviously been freshly made and had come straight from the oven. They were full of fresh ingredients and very tasty.
To round off a meal there is a choice of either a cheese plate or four mini ice cream cones. As we had already overdosed on cheese, we opted for the cones. They came in four different flavours – caramel, pistachio, panna cotta and vanilla. You could immediately taste the different flavours in each and they were the perfect bite size. However, the hot humidity meant that you couldn’t wait too long before eating them!
Terrazza is a great venue for after work drinks or for lunch, drinks or afternoon tea at the weekends. It is also available for private hire, making it a great location for a party of a team building event.
