Preview – American Psycho – The Musical:
I read American Psycho some years ago now. It terrified and shocked me then and the concept of a thriller musical based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis is just a little unnerving. What’s more, a request for imagery to preview resulted in nothing more than the bloody headphones below.:
Just in time for Christmas, the Almeida Theatre are staging a production with Matt Smith in the lead role of Patrick Bateman (Doctor Who will never seem the same!). It promises to shock and enthrall just as the book did in the 1980s. The plot revolves around the narcissistic anti-hero who is living a life of debauchery in New York. One by one his friends disappear, throughout the narrative of the book it is not clear whether Bateman’s involvement is real or imaginary until the very end.
A critique of capitalistic society, the concept of translating that into a musical is both challenging and intriguing. In the hands of a less capable director I believe it would be untenable, but Rupert Goold, the newly appointed artistic director of the Almeida is also the outgoing Director of HEADLONG, one of the UK’s leading theatre companies with a mission to deliver risk-taking and provocative new works and collaborations.
The initial batch of tickets for the show, which opens on 3rd December has sold out (more will be released on general sale on 6th December). There will also be day tickets on sale at 11am on the day of each performance from 13 December to the end of the run.
