The Diner – 4th of July Preview:

Dinerinside
I was invited to sample the special menu at the Soho branch of Diner. Conveniently situated for shopping in Carnaby Street and Liberty’s, this is a great place for a lunch or post shopping revival. The clue is in the name, the décor is like that of a classic American diner, but with added alcohol!

It’s beautifully air-conditioned, which on the rare hot day we are getting, is a welcome relief. !   I have to say that the Mojito really hit the spot for me!

The special menu consists of:

Frito pie, a bag of fritos corn chips topped with beef chili, chese, sour cream, jalapenos and coriander. This was a cute concept and would be great as bar snack with a beer. Be warned, you do need a fork to get at all the delicious chilli!

Chicken skins, these had shredded chicken, Monteray Jack cheese, sour cream and jalapenos on top. These were delicious.

Taco Crunch Burger; A must for anyone who has ever added crisps to a sandwich! The addition of the crisp tortillas to give some crunch was inspirational!   The quality of the burger was amazing; made from 3 different cuts of beef to achieve the ultimate flavour, this 8 oz burger was certainly one of the best I’ve ever had.   I have to say though, that after sampling the other items, I couldn’t finish all of it!

The Independence Day Corn was the least successful of the special items. Authentically Mexican, it was far too salty for my palate. A grilled corn on the cob rolled in lime mayo, grated cheese and chili powder.

Independence Day S’mores; I have often heard American friends refer to these, but have never known what they actually taste like – I knew that toasted marshmallows were involved.   This dish consisted of nutella, toasted marshmallow sandwiched in Graham Crackers.   All I can say is, no wonder diabetes is on the rise in the States!   If you have a sweet tooth, this is the perfect dish for you!

The diner had a good selection of craft beers, both American and British, good cocktails, and a well stocked bar.

So if you fancy joining our American cousins in celebrating Independence Day on 4th July, all the branches will be offering the special menu.

When she lets her hair down it’s to indie bands, preferably live, as she seeks to retain her rock chic status. Sarah makes a mean cocktail and loves trying out new food and drink recipes. a s’more is a camping treat– often featured at sleep over camps for kids. 2 graham crackers with a 4 square piece of Hershey’s chocolate (though I will say that dark chocolate is much better) and then the toasted marshmallows are slid onto the chocolate to melt it and topped with the other graham cracker. They don’t use nutella (since no one in the US knew about nutella particularly when this camping treat was created. It is typically partnered with a banana boat or banana smore (a banana with peel — opened up with just one part of the peel. almost half the banana is scooped out and filled with chocolate squares (hersheys was the type most often used) and marshmallows (preferably the tiny marshmallows). Once stuffed, the banana peel that was the opening was replaced and either directly went to the grill or the coals of a fire pit or it was wrapped in foil and then put on the grill or into the coals.
Wait about 5-7 minutes. The banana once unveiled had carmalized the sugar of the banana and melted the marshmallows and chocolate into an ooey, gooey, sticky, messy treat.. Most kids could not finish an entire banana. but there were very few dirty dishes.. just a spoon!

love the Diner.. I would go there for sure!

I can imagine how amazing it is to be in America on the 4th July so being in an American Diner is the next best thing and this looks great. I’ll have to go soon, it isn’t too far from where I live
