Late Night Dining at Balans Soho Society.
Balans Soho Society is a Soho institution, an iconic 3 am hotspot and the setting for many a crazy night out, so when I heard they’d had a ‘brief breather and ravishing revamp’, I was eager to check it out. The gentrification of Soho is a growing concern for many, especially Balans’ loyal following, so I was concerned about the changes at everyone’s favourite Old Compton Street haunt…
The décor looks fresh and modern but still retains that original Soho charm, with tributes to Soho’s past in the little details. Classic and vintage elements are matched with a splash of anarchy in the colourful artwork. On a Thursday night, the atmosphere was buzzy – groups getting rowdy, welcoming in the (almost) weekend with cocktails and big plates of comforting food.
I started with a Society Teddy Bear cocktail which came in a cute honey bear bottle – Buffalo Trace, cinnamon, cranberry, it was slightly sweeter than my usual taste but went down a treat.
Tip: Come with an empty belly. Portions are big and the dishes are comforting, ranging from steaks and burgers through to lighter options such as Roasted Hake. I started with the Shrimp and Avocado salad, getting my healthy fats and protein. For mains, I attempted to tackle the Infamous Balans Burger.
It made me incredibly sad that I only managed a feeble half. My dinner buddy had the sweet potato gnocchi with roasted chestnuts, pumpkin seeds, chanterelle mushrooms and parmesan which she raved about – so naturally I had to have a little nibble – using sweet potato in the gnocchi was a great alternative, arguably better than using its carbilicious cousin, potato.
Balans Soho Society is one place where you do not forget about dessert! My friend and I shared the High Society Eton mess – a decadent indulgent mix of everyone’s favourite sweet treats – chocolate brownies, salted caramel ice cream, marshmallows, popcorn, heaps of cream and some strawberries and banana thrown in to help you hit your five-a-day! It arrives at the table with a sparkler in the middle demanding attention from the entire room. It made me feel special.
Overall Balans Soho Society is a fun, vibrant and buzzy night out, with great food and fun cocktails. The refurbishment has injected a new lease of life into the restaurant, bar, members club, whatever you want to call it, so get down there pronto and check it out. I’m heading back for brunch for the High Society Eggs Benedict – poached eggs with lobster, avocado, bacon, English muffins and hollandaise sauce – see you there?
