Steak and More at Bar + Block:
Back in December, I had the pleasure of being invited to the launch of Bar + Block in Kings Cross and it was tremendous.
Last week I had the pleasure of going back to dine on a casual Tuesday night and I walked away with the same viewpoint.
Once we were seated, we were served a pot of popcorn. I’m not really a fan of popcorn, I usually find them a bit ‘meh’. I grazed on them nonetheless and they instantly tingled my tastebuds. These ones were not your usual off-the-shelf snack, these were flavoured to taste just like my favourite food – beef. Big tick from me.
During my first visit, I raved about the starters. So I had to of course order two very different ones to check that standards had not slipped. So I ordered the chicken wings accompanied by a garlic cheese creamy sauce and I requested* my dinner date order the seafood pot, a delicious mix of all of the sea creatures – mussels, prawns, white fish, squid and clams.
*told.
The wings massively impressed me – cooked absolutely perfectly. The fear of salmonella means that most of the time chicken is overcooked, even if ever so slightly, meaning that chicken is often drier than it needs to be. Bar + Block, however, were able to achieve that hard to nail level of cooked-but-not-overcooked-and-perfectly-tender-and-juicy chicken.
Bar + Block specialises in steaks, so it would have been silly to order anything else. I went for the 8oz sirloin cooked medium/rare.
Now, when you order a steak that doesn’t have a huge price attached to it, subconsciously you may dismiss it to be “an alright” steak before even tasting it. I will admit I was guilty of that here. So when I took my first mouthful, my mind and mouth were genuinely blown away. The meat was unexpectedly soft and juicy to my requested medium/rare.
To put it simply, this steak was beautiful, or to put it in my boyfriend’s words “that’s hit me for six”!
I raved last time about the brownies and I will rave again. So gooey and so chunky! Just look at all the chocolate chunks! I regret not being able to finish it off.
Now, a lot of the time I’ve gone for a delicious steak, I’ve had to pay a hefty bill at the end and have then often asked myself, was that worth the price tag? And a lot of the time, the answer is no. At Bar + Block, you are getting an absolute steal – especially considering the steaks all come with beef dripping chunky chips – an additional cost at most other places!
The launch night impressed me, but that’s expected as ‘steaks’ are high on such a night, so I was keen to see if Bar + Block still had a strong game when it was business as usual. And I am so glad that it did. To sum up, everything I had eaten that night was cooked to a perfect level of tenderness/softness/gooeyness.
Bar + Block – welcome to Kings Cross – I think you’re here to stay!
