Street entertainment comes to Hayes:
Theatre and entertainment has come to the streets of Hayes this summer; it’s fun and its absolutely free.
Hayes Outdoor is a specially created community initiative between Heathrow Community Trust and Watermans, it provides an exciting outdoor arts space in the heart of Hayes, a place where anyone and everyone can come to see some of the best outdoor performers in the world, for free, featuring a huge variety of different shows from circus to dance to music, all of which aim to delight and inspire people whether they’re 4 or 84.
Hayes Outdoor was launched in 2018 after the success of Bell Square, a similar space in Hounslow, which also hosts outdoor performances. It’s right next door to Hayes & Harlington Station in High Point Village which is a new urban quarter in Hayes comprising apartments, leisure facilities, hotels, shops and restaurants, in a landscaped setting beside the Grand Union Canal. It has been designed give its residents a real sense of community.
It hosts a large square with outdoor seating and standing space. Shows take place every other Wednesday during the afternoon and early evening during the summer months and continue until the end of August. Perfect for dropping by with the family or after work and enjoying the outdoors on warm evenings whilst being thoroughly entertained.
As blogger in residence I have seen several fantastic shows at Bell Square this summer, but this was my first trip to Hayes. It’s an inspirational idea to bring theatre and performance to everyone, engaging all ages in areas that may have not experienced this sort of thing before. I was pleasantly surprised to see a such a large audience gathered in anticipation, the locals are clearly getting in the know about these events.
I was there to see a French circus company Barolosolo, two clowns who with them had brought a very large paddling pool with an overhead frame which I was told held 7000 litres of water, they’re certainly not travelling light!
So … in the spotlight, two clowns aptly dressed in French styled red trousers and navy stripes blazers, playing a selection of instruments including a guitar, viola and a banjo, plus inventively, anything else they could lay their hands on… doesn’t everything have the potential to make music!?
While one gets his feet wet (and much wetter as the show goes on) the other goes to great lengths to avoid a dunking, and here lies the story… a comic dynamic between the two clowns causes much amusement, children were howling delight and every age group seemingly enrapt, especially when one of them clambered up a high pole and hung precariously above the pool. Slapstick and farcical fun are the name of the game, but with poetic scenes and an endearing relationship between the two men.
The second clown who has been avoiding water at all costs finally gets his comeuppance and the splashing and water antics take on a new guise, they lie submerged in water for uncomfortably long periods of time…….a real test of endurance and dare you take a front seat it is more than likely you too will experience a good splashing!
This show is full of energy and farcical antics, and it’s sure to keep the whole family happy!
