Belazu’s New Range of Small Batch Spiced Nuts
Belazu is one of my favourite brands – I met some of the people from the company when I first started writing London-Unattached and I remember hearing about how they’d started by importing olives that you simply couldn’t buy in the UK at the time. Back in 1991 olive oil had only just migrated from the chemist shelf to the delicatessen and olives were always sold pitted, in cans or jars, so that they tasted like salty bits of cardboard. Belazu started by bringing Mediterranean products back to the UK, sourcing the very best products – the sort you would stuff into your luggage if you were holidaying in Provence, Crete or the Basque Country. I believe they originally supplied restaurants – I’m glad they started to sell their range online and to delis and other food shops.
Belazu buys ethically, operates as sustainably as possible and they even have their own charity, the Belazu Foundation, which supports food and education projects for kids and young people in the UK and the Mediterranean.
But most of all I love being able to get a taste of the flavours I find when I’m travelling – without having to leave home. I’ve just been trying their new range of nuts and I’m loving every mouthful. Packed in foil-sealed tins to keep all the flavour in, when you open each one, you can just breathe in the spice mix. Hand roasted in small batches, they are totally addictive.
I’ve got a set of all three flavours to give away to one lucky London-Unattached reader. Which do you think will be your favourite? I can’ t decide between Luxury Truffle and Pecorino, which has all the flavours of Italy that I love, and the delicately spicy Rose Harissa nut mix. If you can’t wait to see if you’ve won, you can buy them direct from the Belazu website – along with a lot more treats!
The prize comprises one tub each of the new Belazu nut range.
Luxury Truffle and Pecorino (130g), £4.95: This indulgent nut mix combines white truffle and Pecorino Romano cheese with creamy cashews, pecans and macadamias to produce a finessed flavour that is bold, rich and packed with umami. Awarded 3 Great Taste stars by the Guild of Fine Foods, the large nut pieces bring a satisfying crunch making it an incredibly moreish mix.
Rose Harissa Nut Mix (135g), £3.85: Belazu’s signature Rose Harissa Nut Mix has a complex flavour with an initial sweetness that leads to the gently spiced flavours of cumin and chilli that build to a mellow and a spicy warmth. The mix has been awarded a Great Taste star by the Guild of Fine Foods and includes whole cashews, almonds and peanuts.
Smoked Chilli Nut Mix (120g), £3.85: A premium nut mix, roasted with ground and whole flakes of smoked paprika, cayenne and bird’s eye chillies to create a harmonised layering of heat and flavour. The crunchy combination of whole cashews, almonds and corn has a strong smoky hit that gives way to a sharp, spicy long-lasting finish.
