SUR MESURE: FILLAGE
‘By the sea is where you find it; You know what you seek.’
Last year I was able to indulge my passion for theatre and the arts as a blogger in residence for Bell Square in Hounslow, which has an exciting outdoor space that has been hosting an arts festival since 2014. In 2017 I saw some magical productions from around the world so I was delighted to be invited to return this year.
Bell Square is a place for every one of all ages to be able to enjoy a huge variety of innovative and entertaining shows and performances including theatre, dance, acrobatics and circus, all drawn from a diverse mix of cultures and styles. The square is situated at the end of Hounslow High Street; it provides a permanent outdoor space with rack seating and standing space.
This year they have added a new venue in Hayes, called Hayes Outdoor, where performances will be taking place on Wednesday evenings, which I am looking forward to visiting at a later date.
I took a trip to Hounslow on Saturday afternoon; the streets were busy with families and shoppers going about their day in the sunshine. I arrived at Bell Square in time to get my seat to watch the 3 pm performance of Fillage by Belguim Company Sur Mesure. There was a wonderfully diverse audience of all ages waiting in expectation and excitement and for what was in store.
Sur Mesure has over 10 years of international performing experience and come from all over the world including Finland, Belgium, Switzerland, England and Australia. They are a fusion of two professional groups: one, a multi-skilled circus performing trio and the other an accomplished female jazz-swing group. The company cleverly brings together artists from different disciplines, and they have created an inventive show, which without language barriers entertains in a charming fashion and appeals to all ages.
The show kicked off with a playful scene with a double bass player and a man upon a ladder juggling in rhythm to the music.
We werequickly introduced to the troupe of talented swing jazz singers and musicians who with their soulful voices and upbeat music brought a real energy and charm to show. Filage tells the story of a day at the beach, a journey through memories of the perfect day, something many people can relate to. The performers bring a deliciously playful feel to the narrative with their great combination of physical theatre and daring acrobatics delivering some impressive juggling and balancing tricks, I loved the trampoline acts where two performers bounced precariously through the air. The camaraderie and humour were infectious and the music was utterly joyous, I looked around to see the audience from toddlers through to the very old all of whom who were totally rapt.
So if you get a chance to visit Bell Square this summer they have got a fantastic program of events happening over the coming months. Shows take place every other Saturday both in the afternoons and some evenings, and it’s completely free of charge, so just roll up and take your seat and be entertained.
