Four Generations of Belgian Brewing from Duvel.
While I am not an avid Beer drinker, I do occasionally like a good Belgian beer.
I’ll admit, I’m lured by the quirky glasses. In the 1960s Duvel was the first beer brand to develop its own tulip glass. The shape is designed to allow Duvel’s flavours and aromas be experienced at their finest. Then, in the 1990s they innovated again by doing something called ‘Nucleating’ – etching a D for Duvel on the bowl of the glass. That creates a signature tornado of bubbles, the glass neck helps retain Duvel’s carbonation while its outward lip makes sure the beer hits the perfect sweetness receptor on the tip of the tongue.
The beer itself has a high alcohol content (8.5% ABV), real depth and a silky smooth mouthfeel. The beer ferments for the first time in tanks using the brewer’s own yeast cultures (which originated in Scotland. Once it has matured in tank, the beer is bottled with extra sugars and yeasts- and then it ferments again in the bottle in warm cellars for two weeks. Finally, it’s moved to cold cellars and allowed to mature and stabilise for a further six weeks. The result is a beer which pairs amazingly well with all sorts of food and which we think is perfect with a good pork casserole at this time of year!
Pour your Duvel Belgian Beer at a 45-degree angle into the Duvel glass and gradually straighten up towards the end of the pour for the perfect, substantial and billowy head. It’s a live bottle-conditioned ale, so you need to make sure you keep the bottle upright until you are ready to serve, then pour it slowly and leave a cm or so at the bottom of the bottle. You may find that the yeast haze pairs well with spicier foods, in which case, you can pour the whole bottle.
Duvel Moortgat is an independent family business with a focus on speciality beers. They actually own ten breweries in Belgium, the Czech Republic, the USA, Italy and the Netherlands. If you’d like to try their beer – or if you already have done so and know you’d like more(!), why not enter our giveaway to win a gift pack comprising one bottle of Duvel, one of Duvel Tripel (A dry-hopped beer where special hops are added later in the brewing process to enhance the flavour), and a Duvel Tulip Glass.
