The English Provender Company®
There are times when being a ‘relatively’ new business is a good thing. The English Provender Company® was established in 1979 by John Curwin and his wife as a cottage industry in Henley-on-Thames producing products such as Lemon Curd and Henley marmalade. Although it has grown, it’s still all about great quality ingredients for its chutneys and pickles, the kind of things that once you’ve put them into a serving dish you can pass off as your own.
And, they now have an inspired range of flavours…the sort of thing you’d love to have thought of yourself like sweet tomato and chilli or plum and Bramley apple. They’ve all been repackaged too, in pretty, quintessentially English watercolour painted jars. So, you might have to look a little harder to find your old favourites on the shelf.
A brand I look out for when I go shopping, The English Provender Company products are made in open pans, the same way I make my own preserves and pickles when I have time. But, of course, generally I DON’T have time – and with products this good around, I don’t really need to bother!
I’ve got some samples of their new range to try out and I am just working out where to start. They have a few suggestions – for example
- Caramelised Red Onion Chutney – pair with a strong hard cheese like mature Cheddar or strong blue cheese like Blacksticks blue or Stilton
- Sweet Tomato and Chilli Chutney – pair with smoked log cheese or a hard cheese like Red Leicester, mild Cheddar or Double Gloucester
- Plum & Bramley Apple Chutney – pair with white soft cheeses like brie and cambazola, rind-washed cheeses like Epoisses or Morbier, or try blue cheeses like Blacksticks blue or Stilton
But I’m wondering what else I could do. I rather like the idea of caramelised red onion chutney with Cornish Pasties. And Plum and Bramley Apple Chutney with a proper Welsh Rarebit (that’s posh cheese on toast to you and me!)
If you happen to be feeling inspired yourself and would like to try your own pairings, they’ve offered me a set of three to give away too.
