Galvin Bistrot de Luxe Review:
There are moments in life where you need to forego the ethics of food blogging in the greater interest of your stomach. One such moment for me came on a recent visit to Galvin Bistrot de Luxe.
A busy brasserie/bistro in Marylebone, Galvin Bistrot de Luxe is the much loved casual dining restaurant of the Michelin Starred Galvin Brothers. I was invited to go along a week or so ago and took The-Hedonist as my dining companion. He’s pescatarian and while on some occasions I love having the excuse to indulge in a large chunk of meat, I had been deeply envious of one of the dishes he enjoyed at Galvin at the Atheneum.
So, breaking our own rules we both ordered the Lasagne of Dorset crab with beurre nantaise. More of that later. We started, as you should at any of the Galvin restaurants, with a glass of Galvin’s own Champagne Cru, a lovely, dry and citrussy champagne from growers near Epernay. It’s a blend of all three Champagne grapes.
The amuse bouche of cheese gougere was delicious and just kept the edge of my appetite until the much anticipated crab lasagne arrived. As I explained in my last review, beurre nantaise is a delicious mixture of beurre blanc with cream, here flavoured with lemon and chives. It’s a fabulous way to set off the lasagne which is a fine stack of delicate pasta sandwiched with a light crab and sole mousse. I wasn’t in the least bit disappointed.
For my main course I ordered honey glazed magret duck breast with beetroot, grelot onion and pomegranate. The duck was firm and meaty with an excellent flavour, offset by the earthy notes of the beetroot and the sweet onion and pomegranate. A glass of Galvin Rasteau Domaine La Soumade, a southern Rhone grenache, was a good pairing for me.
The Hedonist picked the Poached Atlantic cod with orange braised Endive, juniper and rock samphire, a much healthier option which looked stunning. He paired his main course with a glass of Galvin Chardonnay from Burgundy.
I’m particularly impressed with the Galvin restaurants wine offerings – Bistrot de Luxe have a list that includes their own crus carefully selected to complement the food with an extended list offering wines on tap starting at £3.50 a glass in addition to some fine wine options if you are looking to push the boat out.
For dessert, we chose to share the famous Galvin Brothers Apple Tarte Tatin with Normandy Creme Fraiche. A stunning dish with slow cooked apples and a light, buttery puff pastry that was closer to mille-feuille than the kind my mother used to make, we both loved this iconic Galvin dish.
If you happen to think you can do as good or better a job, right now Galvin are running their annual Tarte Tatin competition.

I’ve made my own but really can’t participate as I’ll be out of the country on 10th June when 10 finalists will be invited to participate at Galvin Bistrot de Luxe, bringing their Apple Tarte Tatin with them to be judged. There are some excellent prizes including Tarte Tatin for life!
