Gin and Cranberry Cocktail
Gin cocktails have become very popular in the UK with a wealth of artisan gins using unique blends of botanicals readily available to buy and enjoy. Small gin producers abound and it’s great to be able to sample their products.
One such producer, based in West Sussex, is Afterthought Spirits Company a boutique distillery making handcrafted gins in small batches. Professors Club Secret Garden Gin was developed new for summer 2020 and uses the key botanicals present in two other Professors Club Gins, Professors Club Pink, and Professors Summer Dry, with a twist of different flavours to make a unique combination. The key botanicals for all three gins being juniper, coriander, orris root, angelica, and cardamom. For the Secret Garden, these are twisted with lavender, mint, and hibiscus. Twisted Gin original is based on meadowsweet, fresh lime, orange and tangerine peel and Indian sarsaparilla, an aromatic root. So, if you can’t get Secret Garden I think this gin and cranberry gin cocktail will work very well with Twisted Gin Original.
I was happy to sample The Secret Garden gin which comes beautifully presented in a 50cl white ceramic bottle. The aroma when the bottle is opened is distinctly floral and delicate. But, these are summer gins and although Professor’s Club Original Gin is still available, the limited edition Secret Garden isn’t currently on sale. I wanted to create a cocktail that highlighted the summery notes of this artisan gin while making something that worked well from Autumn through to Winter.
We started by tasting the Secret Garden Gin with Fevertree Indian tonic in a traditional combination; the result was smooth and light and summery with a delicious aftertaste.
To create a cocktail that highlighted the summery notes while warming things up, I mixed the gin with cranberry juice, tonic water, and slices of lime. The result was fruity and mellow, full of flavour.
