Watch I AND YOU, Starring Maisie Williams, FOR FREE from Monday 23 – Sunday 29 March
Missing your bit of culture? London’s Theatres are starting to announce a whole raft of special releases to keep us all happy while we are stuck at home. Here’s one example which should please theatre lovers of all ages. Hampstead Theatre and the entire company of I and You, has just announced the re-release of hit production I and You by Lauren Gunderson on Instagram for free! So if you missed it the first time around, in 2018, when it made it’s UK debut at Hampstead Theatre, you’ve got another chance to catch it! It was a real hit and critical success when it was staged and previously broadcast for free from 30 November to 3 December 2018
The story of Caroline, housebound by a serious liver complaint, and Anthony, a classmate who seeks out her help on a Walt Whitman project is an engaging and witty portrayal of friendship, youth and living life to the full written by one of America’s most-produced playwrights, Lauren Gunderson.
Caroline hasn’t been to school in months and when Anthony bursts in uninvited, armed with waffle fries, a scruffy copy of Walt Whitman’s poetry and a school project due in the next day… Caroline is unimpressed all round.
But an unlikely friendship develops and a seemingly mundane piece of homework starts to reveal the pair’s hopes and dreams – as well as a deep and mysterious bond that connects them even further.
Now, for a week, from Monday 23 March 10 am – Sunday 29 March 10 pm GMT, anyone with an Instagram account will be able to watch the full production by following @hampstead_theatre or @lalatellsastory (Lauren Gunderson).
The play will be available to view on-demand on their IGTV channels.
Hampstead Theatre closed its building following UK Government advice on Monday 16 March 2020 and is currently looking at alternative ways of continuing to engage with its industry and audiences. This is a great start, one that will appeal to a broad section of theatre-lovers.
Roxana Silbert, Artistic Director of Hampstead Theatre said: “Like everyone in the theatre community right now, and indeed across the globe, we at Hampstead Theatre are watching these unprecedented events unfold and wondering what we can do to help.
We are an industry that seeks to bring people together and tell stories that resonate. I hope this particularly tender and funny story offers some much-needed entertainment and connection right now – thank you to Lauren Gunderson, Edward Hall, Maisie Williams, Zach Wyatt and the entire company in allowing us to share your beautiful work.”
