Red Letter Days for Christmas Treats
Looking for a special present for someone who seems to have everything?
Red Letter Days might be just the ticket. In the past we’ve tried all sorts of Red Letter Day vouchers – spa days and afternoon teas are a particular favourite.
But, we also love their dining offers, particularly those in the kind of places we really want to visit and are looking for a special occasion. We’ve already had some wonderful meals including this very special lunch at The Savoy Grill. This time we wanted to check out one of Jason Atherton’s newer offerings, right in the heart of Harrods. Now, you might be there for pre-Christmas shopping or you might be braving the January sales. Or you might just save your voucher up for a special occasion (we were on our way to the Opera!). Even if you don’t have an excuse, we recommend making your way to Harrods Social.
We went along to try the Red Letter Day set menu for two, a snip at £98 for three courses each and a glass of Prosecco. It’s one of a host of spin-offs from Jason Atherton’s Pollen Street Social and the kind of menu that could easily be a diluted version of the original. But, it really isn’t!
We started with a rich, creamy Cumbrian beef tartare with a sourdough crouton, pickled onion and goat’s curd. Unctuous and morish, a carnivore’s delight.
And, Devon crab, with nashi pear, lemon gel, coriander salad which arrived looking alarmingly like a jelly fish but turned out to be a deliciously fresh start to the meal with the citrus twist of the lemon gel and the crisp salad topping
For main courses, the Cornish hake was beautifully seared and served with a white miso emulsion, braised pak choi and crispy squid with a peppercorn dressing.
Cob chicken was perfect winter comfort food, with truffle mash, braised mushrooms, baby leeks and a rich, sticky Madeira sauce. The chicken was moist and tender and the truffled mash stood up well to the Madeira sauce.
Just for fun, we ordered the ice cream box for dessert which comes with 5 white ice-creams, each with different flavours. Would you have guessed? Yoghurt, cinnamon, goats cheese, lemongrass and milk. We got a few…and failed with apparently simple flavours like cinnamon!
Meanwhile, the 82% Valrhona chocolate tart with milk ice cream remained my preferred option!
At just under £100 for two people including a glass of fizz each, the Red Letter Day set menu at Harrods Social is a great way to treat yourself or someone else. And, even if you prefer something other than eating out, Red Letter Day vouchers make the perfect Christmas gift.
There are plenty more options on the Red Letter Days Site. And, just because it’s Christmas they’ve offered us a voucher worth £98 to give to a lucky London-Unattached reader. So, whoever wins could try the same meal at Harrods Social too (or swap their voucher for an alternative). Do pop over to the Red Letter Days Site and take a look. As usual, all you need to do for your chance to win is to pop over to the Red Letter Days site and let me know in the comments below who you think deserves a Red Letter Day gift this year, what you think would be perfect for them and why! Please don’t post links or your comments might end up in spam!!!
